Crieff Hydro, the traditional weekend bolthole of the central belt middle classes, have a range of Genesis bikes for hire including the Caribou MTB (older geometry frame) with 4" tyres. Crieff describe it as a 'novelty' bike, which seems a bit unfair.

I took one out on the trails behind the hotel for a couple of hours, which is about how long my legs lasted. It felt like hard work, but bags of grin inducing fun.

Oh, I like the bottles mounted on the front forks!
(I know a lot of MTBers use a backpack, but you can't put bottles in the usual place on a frame if you've filled your frame with a bag)

It may have been a general sale on Farcebook, I'll check. It may have been, I think it was arounf £700 they were looking for?

Fraser Waters at the Happy Cog in Bilston has a Surly Ice Cream Truck Ops available for a test ride. Plenty of single track around there to give it a good test run too.

It's not advertised on the website (http://www.thehappycog.co.uk/) but he can be reached at workshop@thehappycog.co.uk.

@IWRATS I had the same issue and now have a fat bike. I went for a genesis longitude as it's a bit less full on than some others - just a skinny 2.8" tyre rather than the 3"+ you see on some fat bikes. That's more than enough for some cushiony goodness as you roll along.

Gave a shot to someone who compared it very favourably to their MTB for rolling speed, they said their bike felt sluggish even though my tyres are far bigger.

I absolutely love mine.

This lot, FatBike Tours, appear to run tours based around North Berwick. They may do hires as well, or they may be long gone as the website doesn't appear very up to date.

@IWRATS - I did a gig at the Old Course hotel in St Andrews a wee while back, and they were renting them out... specifically a genesis Caribou I think. I realise you might not necessarily frequent such an establishment as a matter of (golf) course, but in case you're up there and can somehow wing hiring one without being a guest...

I am becoming fat bike curious. I have pawed a couple in shops. I like the idea of a rigid framed bike that goes anywhere without joining the Royal Glentress Storm Troopers.

Don't suppose anyone's got one they don't use and would let me try for a day...? You'd get it back clean and serviced.
