So 7(!) years on from this consultation, we now have this:

https://www.edinburghlive.co.uk/news/edinburgh-news/edinburgh-police-headquarters-could-demolished-27707455

"Edinburgh police plan to abandon force headquarters as crumbling concrete found
Police Scotland chiefs are now looking to start a consultation on "exiting" the Fettes base - which was the headquarters of the former Lothian and Borders force.
Collapse-prone concrete has been found in 14 fire stations and three police stations including Police Scotland's Fettes building in Edinburgh, MSPs have been told.
Fettes has been found to have reinforced autoclaved aerated concrete (Raac) in 10 areas in its roof, extending to more than 4,000 square metres.
With the estimated cost of repair said to be just over £4 million, Police Scotland's chief financial officer James Gray told a Holyrood committee it is "not economically viable" to carry out the work."

Time for CEC to create some facts on the <strike>ground</strike> road before flats?

Carrington Road was closed at the junction with Crewe Rd South last week (not sure if it still is???). And I have to say it was lovely cycling along it without all the rat-running traffic. And the world did not end.

Why not close it permanently at one end with bollards? Much quicker and cheaper than any fancy-pants segregation.

Correctly consulting is important, as it will shape a scheme and reduce objections.

I didn't like many/any of the small interventions, they were the sort of crap that might have been built in the 90s like the Roseburn corner cut-off. However one must be pragmatic, sometimes there's budget for tinkering, and stuff like Easter Rd could have been built in no time at all after go-ahead. None of these schemes were major enough to warrant anything more than a consult - revise - statutory process - build cycle.

Running consultations to waste time / budget, as these seem to have been in hindsight, could lead to increased consultation fatigue and mistrust in the system.

Hopefully the refocus on major projects is real and it will be a much better way of spending money.

Weren't the schemes being developed by external consultants anyway?

Exactly - they were all AECOM. This isn't a council headcount matter. They were just bunged enough cash to launch the projects then abandoned.

To some extent that’s self-inflicted and lack of planning. Very clear more staff are NEEDED.

Aye everything's on hold because CEC got a big grant for a route up the Mound.

More than a bit disappointing that improvements which have been on hold for 18 months already are to be postponed/mothballed for an as yet unspecified period.

Meanwhile full steam ahead for Picardy Place, where of course the design work is being carried out by the developers...

Recieved today:

CARRINGTON ROAD WALK AND CYCLE IMPROVEMENTS

Dear Sir/Madam,

I’m writing to you concerning the delay in the development of the designs for Carrington Road. You
kindly responded to our consultation on the scheme back in Summer 2016.
In the consultation documents we indicated our intention to complete the designs to the point where
they are ready for a second consultation, with those whom expressed interest, and potential
construction in 2017/18.
Taking into account the feedback from consultation, the designs have been further refined.
Unfortunately however, the project has had to be put on hold due to a lack of staff resources. As such
we are not currently able to progress this scheme to completion of the detailed design and reissue it for
consultation.
It is our intention recommence the design process once staff resources permit. The consultation that we
have already undertaken has been very useful in refining the designs and these will remain as part of
the design process once the scheme is taken forward again.
We appreciate your patience in the delay of delivering this project and hope to be to recommence work
on it as soon as is possible.

Carrington Road
Changes to be included:
 We shall add an eastbound cycle lane across the junction of Crewe Road South.
 We shall also add a ‘keep clear’ area to Carrington Road between the right turn cycle lane and the segregated cycleway entrance. We shall also adjust the right turn lane area so that it is closer to the cycleway. Lengthen and widen weighting area.
 We will consider an early cycle release, to help people cycling cross the junction ahead of traffic.
 We shall remove the guardrail and parking outside this entrance. In place of the parking we shall install a build out of the pavement and install dropped kerbs for cycle and
wheelchair access. To improve crossing conditions, we will also add build outs and dropped kerbs on the west side of the street, either side of the entrance to the police station.
 We shall add dropped kerbs on the west side of East Fettes Avenue, south of the proposed toucan crossing. This will allow people cycling to use the crossing or to make the right turn into Inverleith Park without using the crossing.
 We will consider locations for bike parking.
 We shall consider ways to increase the capacity of the waiting island for situations of multiple people cycling and bikes with trailers.
 To ensure ease of access for people cycling re-joining the carriageway, at the junction of East Fettes Avenue and Carrington Road, we shall widen the break the segregation to
4m.
 We shall add build outs at the entrance ways to Fettes School, as requested by the school (see consultation feedback below). These build outs shall be placed on both
sides of the road and include dropped kerbs and informal crossings of the cycleway.
 We shall extend the double yellow lines at the west end of Carrington Road to ensure the cycleways will not be blocked.
 At the junction of Carrington Road and East Fettes Avenue, we shall move the proposed raised table to be in line with the junction mouth. At the same junction we shall increase
the width of the entrance gap to the cycleway to improve access for people cycling.

Seeing as there's a 0.5m kerb between the road and the cycleway I'll grudgingly accept the 2.2m for now with a recommendation to widen it on the bends and at the ends(see also Mckelvie Parade).

"- The junction at the Craigleith side is a bit of a joke."

The only bit I'm going to recommend not bothering with for now is the red-paint-across-the-road-into-the-gutter-on-Craigleith-Hill-Avenue - there is usually something parked on the left within thirty metres, so I aim further north. They can paint the junction properly later when there's something on the west of it to join up.

"Why not just throw open the gates properly?"

Because people would drive in.

But there must be a better way than this -

At 2.2m the width is below the minimum specified

I was slightly concerned about the 0.5m gap to the parked cars, but the scheme as a whole seems to be a large improvement, although I've never actually been down Carrington Road.

Some thoughts on the Carrington Road scheme which is of interest to me as I use Carrington Road as part of my route to take the little ones to Inverleith Park/Botanic Gardens:

1. At 2.2m the width is below the minimum specified in the Sustrans Guidance and the Governments Cycle infrastructure design guidance. I use this route towing a child trailer which is 0.9m wide so would have concerns about hitting the kerb, other bikes/trailers coming the opposite way and overtaking bikes.

2. The scheme isn't proposing to do anything regarding the access to Inverleith Park. Negotiating the entrance on bike is already tricky. With a trailer it is a complete pain and this will get much worse if this scheme encourages more folk to travel by bike (which I hope it will).

3. Coming from the Crewe Road South side, the island in the middle of the road could quickly become congested if there are a few bikes there at the same time. A bit like the Hope Park Crescent lane, it also looks like they haven't allowed enough room for a bike with a trailer to perform the 90 degree turn which could leave me stuck half-in and half-out in a live traffic stream.

It's a shame it stops just at a conflict point. Hopefully the left turn ban will mean less oncoming traffic to force you uncomfortably close to parked cars.

It's referring to Powderhall Waste Transfer Depot, where the bin lorries of Edinburgh deposit their contents to be compacted into shipping containers.

These containers are sent six days a week by rail to the landfill site south-east of Dunbar.

Once Powderhall closes there's no reason for that rail branch to stay open and hypothetically Chancelot path can be extended out all the way to Meadowbank via Leith Walk and Easter Rd. A useful link, when it comes.

Sorry for beginner question but what's "the compactor"? Is it a bad road junction or an actual compactor?

Have completed the Carrington Road survey, supporting the proposals as they will make this road much, much safer for cyclists and will also improve the situation for pedestrians.
