I don't see how bollards are going to help with making peds and cyclists look both ways for trams before crossing. Indeed, for cyclists, they'll be a near-field distraction to navigate.

Did some measuring this morning, the gap between the central bollard and the side bollards varies massivly, as large as 1m90 one side of the tram at Edinburgh Park and then 90cm the other and 1m29, 1m25, 1m8cm and 1m02 at the crossing before Edinburgh Park station.

I also measured a gap at the side to the bollard of 69cm at Edinburgh Park.

I think some of these will be difficult on a normal bike let alone a Cargo Bike or Tandem.

The RAIB highlighted a lack of barriers to force people to change direction when approaching tramway crossings in their report on the person that sadly died nearby. I imagine this is a response to that

@Paulmilne, I think legitimising customary behaviour justifies it. There is always a risk from a disgruntled driver who was annoyed by a cyclist using the pedestrian crossing.

@paulmilne - one of the buildings is used by the cricket clubs.

Friends of Roseburn Park want to turn the smallest one into a cafe. If that happens then something will have to be done about a cycle route - maybe take part of the grassed area?

My problem with moving the commuters (me) out of the park onto the A8 even after the CCWEL is one of the wider network. I use the park to get to the access of the shared use path by the tramline via Balgreen Road. Even if I used the A8 post CCWEL I'd still have to get down the way to my destination (Saughton House).

I do try to go at a reasonably slow speed through the park if there are other users, and take care weaving through the building. Are the buildings actually used for anything? Maybe they could be removed to improve sightlines and reduce visual clutter for everyone.

@Stickman - I have the impression of people going too fast past the buildings as well. I hate tactiles anywhere but I think they are statutory on shared paths eg the tramway from Balgreen. I would certainly agree about getting the commuters out & can see that being a logical development after the CCWEL is built, though of course the "Community" would hate it. Certainly there's conflict in the Park, which should be for gentle leisure cycling, not commuting. Would you have any suggestions about the layout, other than knocking down those buildings?

Received a survey asking for views on the layout in Roseburn Park. I responded to say that I didn't think it was working (it encourages people to cycle faster past the buildings as they may assume no one is walking on the bike side, and that the tactiles were rubbish and I always try to avoid the ones on the bike side). Also said that if they want to get fast cyclists (mostly commuters) out of the park then build a safe lane on the A8.

For reference, the original consultation is here: https://consultationhub.edinburgh.gov.uk/sfc/design-cycle-walk-balgreen-road/

Changes to be included:
 We shall consider a continuous footway at Makro.
 Additional signage and ground markings shall be added along all new sections of shared
use pavement.
 The new proposed crossing, at the entrance to Forrester High School, shall be a toucan
crossing.
 A decluttering assessment of existing street furniture shall be undertaken.

Balgreen Road
Changes to be included:
 We shall change the design to bring the pavement entry/exit point on Baird Drive further
east, away from the junction. This will make it safer and easier for cyclists to join the
crossing from Baird Drive and rejoin the road (Baird Drive) from the pavement.
 We shall include dropped kerbs and shared use re-determination along the widened
section of pavement between Saughton Hall Drive and the crossing of Balgreen Road.
This shall provide the access that you have highlighted.

Changes to be included:
There are no changes that shall be made to the current proposals. However, this is a 3 month trial and
we shall evaluate its effectiveness and reopen the consultation for further feedback before proposing a
permanent solution.

Sadly, I don't think much of the rest of 'improvements' around the 2-stage crossing with the central islands. A proper improvement would be the creation of a cycling 'flyover' of the road there.

I don't think I've seen anyone dismount for the Balgreen Crossing. There is a nicely ambiguous sign on Baird Drive saying "Cyclists use crossing".

The Roseburn Park segregation seems a waste of time and money given the state the park is in just now and potential plans which will involve the rugby team building a pavilion/a cafe opening in the old toilet block/the block being demolished.

LOL. Only in Edinburgh would we build a massive segregated cycle facility then forget the crossing at the end.
