Law and Order (& its offshoots) cover both. Just don't watch the execrable UK version.

@gkgk He was police though. Maybe you want to brush up on your Perry Mason re-runs?

"What would we be saying if the PF had gone for causing death and the Sheriff had acquitted?"

I think there are other crimes, such as rape, where there were (or still are) concerns over low conviction rates, and remedies are attempted other than simply reducing the charges. And, separate bonus point, isn't it possible to lay more than one charge? The phrase that springs to mind is "found guilty of the lesser charge of blah blah". Maybe I'm imagining that. I'm not actually a fully qualified lawyer though I have seen a few hours of Colombo.

Reminds me of the time I was taken out by that lobotomite on Russell road who cut the corner straight into me dislocating my shoulder. Scum refused to believe he cut the corner and even pretended he didn't see me. He was only fined around £300.

"And in any case the cyclist was probably running a red light, while not wearing hi viz and not having any lights on or a helmet. Reverting to type. As all cyclists do."

Doesn't excuse hitting people. Funny how you could be carrying a ladder accidentally hit someone and be charged harshly but open a door on someone and it's not your fault even if you try to blame everything else.

Yep all taxi drivers are the same and will always revert to type.

Tragic case. As for PF messing up, what would we be saying if the PF had gone for causing death and the Sheriff had acquitted? If anything the view of the Sheriff there is out of step (in a good way) with the majority of her peers.

And in any case the cyclist was probably running a red light, while not wearing hi viz and not having any lights on or a helmet. Reverting to type. As all cyclists do.

Time for another extended break from CCE. RSS being turned off. Toodle.

(I'll forward the contributory negligence piece through chdot - been an interesting one that).

Police Scotland appear to have objected to his (or another Joseph Connelly's) last taxi licence renewal - I wonder if there is any way to find out whether related to this incident or something else?

https://www.glasgow.gov.uk/councillorsandcommittees/viewSelectedDocument.asp?c=P62AFQDNT1DXZ30G0G

Not that it came to anything:

http://www.glasgow.gov.uk/Councillorsandcommittees/viewSelectedDocument.asp?c=P62AFQDNT1DX81T1Z3

More here:

http://www.scotsman.com/news/glasgow-taxi-driver-fined-for-hitting-cyclist-with-cab-door-1-4261314

So in short, denied it, busted by CCTV, reverts to type by trying to blame a private hire driver.

I truly hate taxi drivers.

'Connelly, from Garnethill, Glasgow, pled guilty to opening the door while it was parked "to the endangerment and injury" of Mr Thomson.

When questioned at the scene, Connelly said "He didn't hit the door, he swerved round it and lost control." '

'Fining Connelly, Sheriff Celia Sanderson said the incident was "tragic" and she noted her "surprise" at the charge Connelly faced.

She pointed out he had not been charged with causing Mr Thomson's death. '

Procurator Fiscal's office messing it up again - how many times?
