I was on this a couple of weeks ago en route to and from Cramond. Wide, smooth, nice to cycle. Really useful path to connect to the NEPN. Not *too* bad a connection from Ocean Terminal either, except for the on-road vehicle dodging. Pity it just gives up further west, but it's a start.

"albeit with a less than ideal crossing of Lochinvar Drive"

Looking at the initial plans, this was supposed to be a raised table. Do we know if that was dropped or just not finished yet?

From the consultation report:

"We shall also remove the left turn carriageway on Lochnivar Drive and tighten the corner radii. This will give pedestrians
and cyclists priority. Giveway markings will indicate to drivers to stop."

At Granton Square itselt there is a toucan crossing across to the south side of the road. I wasn't sure if the other side was then shared use (Granton Road pavement is certainly wide enough but heads in the wrong direction). Maybe it is just so you can rejoin the carriageway on the correct side?

The cycleway appears to continue as far as Oxcraig Street, albeit with a less than ideal crossing of Lochinvar Drive. At that point it just ends.

I got this yesterday:

The City of Edinburgh Council - Cycle and Walking Improvements at Lower Granton Road

To the Owner/Occupier

T & N Gilmartin (Contractors) Ltd has been appointed by The City of Edinburgh Council to construct cycle and walking improvements to Lower Granton Road from the Trinity Road Junction to Oxcraig Street as highlighted in green above. The works include:

Upgrading the existing McKelvie Parade shared use path to 4m wide

Construction of new 4m shared use path from the Wardie Bay Garage to Oxcraig Street

New street lighting along the length of route. On the back of consultation in 2018 we are including landscaping, wild flower meadows, tree planting and shrub planting.

A new toucan crossing at the junction of Lower Granton Road and Granton Square

The next phase of the works due to commence on 1st July 2019 for upto 4 weeks includes:
Road closure on Lower Granton Road for west bound traffic only to construct a new toucan crossing outside 172 Lower Granton Road.

Access Only for residents/businesses.
Alternative routes for through vehicular traffic are available by way of Craighall Road, Ferry Road & Granton Road
Closure of the existing breakwater access to pedestrians and vehicles and no parking enforced on both sides of the road between 121 and 131 Lower Granton Road.

Throughout this work, emergency vehicle access and pedestrian access to properties will be maintained or alternatives provided.

We will make every effort to minimise disruption and noise, but unfortunately some is unavoidable during works of this type. We would very much appreciate your patience and would apologise in advance for any inconvenience that these works may cause.

Please feel free to contact me should you have any queries about any aspect of the site work, or if you have any special access requirements. info@tngilmartin.co.uk

The combined footpath and cyclepath will be in the region of 5m wide there. Only a grievance manufacturer would have an issue?

A bigger problem might be deterring pavement/path parkers...

re-align Lower Granton Road

I think they want to build it out into the sea, or at least build it on top of the (what they consider to be) unnecessary planned cycle path.

re-align Lower Granton Road

Do you know what exactly they mean by this?

I don't know the area, but looking at a map/Google Street View, the only place I can see that the road could be "re-aligned" is at the eastern end, to remove the wee bend before it becomes Trinity Crescent. But that doesn't seem worth the effort...

Wardie Bay Residents Assn gunning for something bigger:

http://nen.press/2018/03/13/granton-plans-not-good-enough-say-wardie-bay-residents/

[and trying to kibosh the existing cycling plans :-( ]

Our greatest concern is that by its location the cycleway would prevent the long-standing aspiration to re-align Lower Granton Road in order to provide proper pavements widths, a car parking strip (for residents , visitors, and deliveries) as well as sufficient carriageway width for two vehicles to pass safely.

So basically, they want the road widened.

I went along to the Granton and District Community Council Public Meeting on 7th March.
A video of the proceedings is on their Facebook Page
Seems to have been some social media fuss over nothing.
Tom Haddock from the Active Travel Team gave an overview of the proposed route and the consultation and covered concerns that were being raised re:
- scope of the scheme - only funded specifically for walking and cycling safety improvements. Not to take forward the Sustrans Neighbourhood project or specifically as part of the Promenade project. Some of the locals were calling for traffic calming/reduction/limitations and for re-architecting the whole area.
- spoil will not be dumped but could be used for landscaping or utilised off-site.
- project is working with environmental groups re the "special" status of the area
- some landscaping options and benches etc
Attendees largely supportive of making the area safer for cycling and adding crossing facilities.
A separate project (under way?) to improved Granton Square.
Regards,
Martin

Please ignore the new topic that I started and continue with this one. Have copied the info to here.

There was a consultation last year that had general support, but it now seems to be getting some opposition from locals.

Any locals on this Forum that can find out what's happening and maybe go along to a Public Meeting next week - 7th March?

This Tweet for Wardie Bay Beach:
Dear All, please attend this meeting of local groups including @WardieBay residents. e.g. @grantoncastle @SpokesLothian @granton_hub. The environmental benefits of this plan are not yet clear & input is called for. #joinedupthinking #community #publicrealm #activetravel

Spokes not been involved as yet and I may not be able to attend.

Their concern seems to be that the proposals don't match up to the 2008 design principles for the Waterfront.

Previously someone was tweeting that it would need to be dug up when the tram comes - but it's beyond extent of current tram plans.

It's due to have 2nd stage design, consultation and TROs done this year (2017/18). I've dropped Martyn Lings in the Active Travel team an email.

Seems you need to REGISTER
