Dundas was okay. Never gothought ridiculously steep and traffic gave us space.

The worst bit was negotiating the ramps between Rutland and Festival Square, they weren't built for my size of bike.

Okay. Dundas it is...

Thanks for all the advice.

No traffic, just a hill with setts.

Gloucester Street a serious hill.

Check StreetView.

Still think you'd be better with Dundas Street, not really much traffic, wide - and no setts.

Is Gloucester Lane quiet traffic wise?

I'm on a tandem plus tag-a-long so could fit into the gutter.

I don't mind some gradient/suffering but would rather not have to concentrate on traffic at the same time. Not that I could do much at 3-4mph...

Coming off Warriston Path, Rodney St tunnel->King George V Park ramp->Cornwallis Place -> Bellevue Crescent -> Broughton St -> Albany St is reasonbly optimal in terms of gradient & lack of setts, though a roundabout has to be negotiated.

I can't believe it's been five years since the 12 Steepest Rideable Streets with Kaputnik and Laid Back, but as far as I remember*, going up Gloucester Lane wasn't any worse than, say, Victoria Street is, and it has a big gutter you can ride in to smooth out the cobbles.

* and I may be wrong

No good options imo especially with load and kids (in trailer?)

If you've got a low gear, how about Dundas St, Hanover and George St? No setts but that last pull up to George Street is steep, and busy of course. On a lighter bike, I do Broughton St, walk across to Queen St then St Andrew Sq to George St, but I don't suggest that to you with the kids.

Dublin St? Still setts on Scotland St and Drummond Place, but not quite as steep as Gloucester Lane.

How about cutting through to Stockbridge then talking Gloucester street up via moray place and great Stuart street round to west end of Charlotte square. That might work.? Also takes in the largest unbroken Georgian terrace in the world. Downside Lorra, Lorra cobbles

I have to do this tomorrow afternoon on the fully loaded big bike (inc kids)

What's the best option for grinding our way up very slowly through the New Town?

Googol is suggesting Gloucester Lane - looks steep and setted.

Am tempted to do the NEPN round to Roseburn and in that way but adds miles.
