Also Leuchars is a stop for the express. Get that and it's half an hour faster than the one which stops at all the stations in between.

I do this every day!

If you leave from Waverley you should have no problem in the morning, I've not had a problem in two and a half years, although sometimes we're at full capacity. Haymarket should be fine too, but I'd go to Waverley if you want to be certain. There are spaces for two bikes at both the front and rear carriage.

At the time you're coming home there should be no problem, but if you get the train at half four ish it's a Virgin train which you need to book because of a short platform at Leuchars. I've managed to get on a couple of times without without booking in the bit where they're not supposed to allow bikes, the conductor is always massively stressed about this until you say that you're only going as far as edinburgh.

Remember that the wind will be against you on the way home!

After nine you should be absolutely fine. You're going the "wrong way" so there should be plenty of space. Coming back, you're also going the "wrong way" and if you avoid peak time (4pm onwards) the train shouldn't be too busy. The only day this plan may not work is on a Friday, when the trains just seem quite a lot busier.

I need to go to St Andrews for work purposes (basically their library is better stocked than ours for some stuff I need so better just go there and browse rather than faff about with interlibrary loans) on a weekday, and was thinking of taking the bike rather than depend on the bus from Leuchars. But I'll be restricted for time as I need to do nursery pickup, and as I'd rather make the most of the time there I'd rather not take the risk of not getting on the train of it's real. So would it be worth trying to get the bike on that train, leaving just after nine and being back at Haymarket by half five at the latest? Or is there a chance of being left waiting?
