They're similar. Human error by humans. I make mistakes on bicycles and in automobiles. Automobile errors are potentially much more serious as either could kill me but one could kill others.

IMO driving around with windows so steamed up you can't see out of them is not a mere mistake.

It's human to make mistakes... the question is what the consequences of a mistake are. Even if we had a society like in Amsterdam there would still be occasional deaths and injury... but on a different magnitude... and with this change of magnitude also comes a change in the accessibility of streets: so in Edinburgh kids and frail older people and people with some disabilities are driven off the roads - kept separate from the main shops and venues. In Amsterdam (clearly I'm generalising a bit) they are out and about with direct access.

In Utrecht I saw a frail older woman walk slowly to her bike, fold her stick up, and zoom off on a bike (with a pause when she knocked the bike over and someone else helped her up with it).

So yes - causes are the same - human nature the same - consequences MUCH more serious. That doesn't make 'drivers' bad people - but emphasises the need for design that decreases the consequences that come from normal human failings.

Oh, you wanted me to elaborate?

Whilst the inattention was the same, the forces involved are orders of magnitude different.

Hence the higher duty of care that should be expected.

Equally, it matters even less if people walk around daydreaming!

Don't know if anyone else has spotted the similarities in 2 posts from me within 12 hours. It only occurred to me riding home tonight of the similarities between them.
