It was also a handy way of attaching microphones, headsets and oxygen masks to your face. It may have offered slight "bump" protection in turbulence or in the event of having to bail out.</p> <p>There a chap I see now and again cycling on the Restlarig path who wears an old Russian air crew helmet, like the above, but made from quilted canvas (like the Russian tanker's helmet, but a bit less padded, and olive green, not black).
