Whether he is interested in transport or just the politics of transport is hard to tell -

"apparently the previous Transport Secretary (Hammond) couldn't understand why cycling comes under the Department for Transport"

Pretty much the same up here.

Two many reasons - decades of carcentricity and a complete lack of understanding that transport is essentially about moving people. Walking, which involves vastly more people than cycling, hardly gets a thought (and is also largely sidelined to health/leisure).

Transport is obviously about moving goods too. This is know as trade or economic activity and therefore unquestionably good and to be facilitated - predominantly by more/wider roads.

Is there any freight on the Borders line?

"so it's no surprise he's a useless Transport Secretary"

Depends whether he is expected to do anything/change things (eg the natural order of transport priorities).

I can't remember if I learnt this nugget from CCE, but apparently the previous Transport Secretary (Hammond) couldn't understand why cycling comes under the Department for Transport. He thought it should lie with Health or Sport.

Some of the comments are good:

StevieDee

"London has too many badly designed cycle lanes"

Blame your mate Boris - he was in charge when most of the high profile ones were installed.

"too many cyclists ... ignored the rules of the road"

Your point? Most are trying to compensate for that badly designed infrastructure you just mentioned. To put it in perspective, too many drivers also ignore the rules, and kill and injure large numbers of innocent people as a result.

“I don’t think all the cycle lanes in London have been designed as well as they should have been”

Too right. Innocent road users died on them because of that, and it took intense and prolonged public pressure on your mate Boris to make them safer. For most of the others we're still waiting.

"too many riders ignored red traffic lights on their journeys in the capital"

What, is this bash a cyclist day? Red light jumping is responsible for a tiny proportion of road incidents. I guess you only see what you want from behind the windscreen of your Saab 1.8-litre convertible. When you're not using your phone to chase Pokemon, buy lunches at the Commons or send texts, that is.

“Motorists in London have got to be immensely careful of cyclists”

They've got to be just as careful of people on foot, though since they manage to kill up to 60 of these a year in London alone I don't hold out much hope of that.

“At the same time, cyclists in London are too often unwilling to obey the road signs. I’ve seen regular examples of people who just bolt through red lights."

Change the record, you useless, lying sack of

and:

toomey

16% of cyclists jump reds, killed Zero last year, 70% of drivers admit OFTEN speeding, killed 700. And Grayling demands a medal for not driving into stuff. What a slaphead clown.

I think it is actually worth reading the bilge (in a manner of speaking) for all the "I try not to get caught speeding" or "when I say drink-drivers I don't mean when you or I have a drink and drive, I mean when OTHER people do it" and other such nonsense. He sounds perfect for a UK transport minister to me. Outta my way brrrooooommmm!

Chris Grayling, Transport Minister for England, has shared his enlightened (not) views with the Evening Standard.

http://www.standard.co.uk/news/politics/chris-grayling-i-use-a-phone-to-buy-lunch-so-why-do-we-still-queue-for-rail-tickets-a3413296.html

If you want to skip most of the bilge and head to the cycling, bingo myths, bilge, scroll down to the bottom. Almost a parody. Needless to say, he hasn't ridden a bike since he was a student but still feels qualified to express a primitive driverist opinion.
