One was great but with an owner who hated the general public. One was a sort of dampo house made of harling (Kestrel was its name - some people might remember it fondly as they did their underage drinking in it)

Me and my pals did our underage drinking in the former. General misanthropy aside it was indeed a very very very nice pub. Still miss it on Xmas Eve if I'm home.

Honky was grim
The Balerno populace has gone nuts for this new pub
I cannot fathom why
I am sure it will be good
20 years back the village had four pubs. One was great but with an owner who hated the general public. One was a sort of dampo house made of harling (Kestrel was its name - some people might remember it fondly as they did their underage drinking in it)
Malleny /Honky was grim
Grey Horse snug had open fire - IWRATS could have pushed the punters into it then too. It is now a stove that is too hot for the room despite being the tiniest of stoves. An inefficient open fire better.
THer grey horse had a makeover and I get on well with the staff but this is not universal
The people who run the letterbox restaurant in the Post Office are lovely
Come to Balerno, book a room in the hotel, walk up to The Kips, go to the other pub, visit the covenanter's grave, go to the post office?

Surprisingly well implemented quiz for the Evening News website, with the after/before pictures being a nice touch.

I reckon someone with no knowledge at all of Edinburgh pubs could get a reasonably good score given the way the multiple choices were presented. I'm pretty clueless on this topic but managed 16; possibly too much knowledge would be a distraction.

Malleny arms sitting derelict now

At the Balerno farmers market On Saturday I was talking to the chap trying to sell wood pellet burning stoves (hard sell as everyone has wood burning stoves and that book Norwegian wood (chapters include how to stack wood etc).

The other son of the man IWRATS set on fire comes up and asks if there is any smoke to which stove pellet man says a little, the stove is connected to a flue on his lorry you can see the smoke trickling out. IWRATS immolation son starts ranting that the second he puts a fire on his neighbour's complain. He then laments the loss of the Malleny arms which was his place.

Well the worst pub I ever went into was the Malleny Arms. Old geezer came over to shout at me about outside toilets at random and fell in the fireplace he was so wrecked. I picked him out of the fire and dusted him down, but some hoodlum claiming to be his son turned up during this process and pointedly asked why I'd set fire to his dad (in a tone of voice that suggested this might not be the first time someone had done this), with his eyeballs stotting out of his head and doing some kind of kung-fu dance. I took the hint and retreated with my companion.

Not an ideal first date I can tell you.

I remember The Reverie as the Wine Glass. The worst pub I ever went into was the Telford Arms: the rumor was that you had to have ten scars to stand at the bar. Bloke threatened to feed my mixed race colleague to his dog.

The grey horse in Balerno has just had a great makeover, lots of original features such as doors and fireplaces revealed. Will be public bar as separate same as now, with log fire then lounge with. Am guessing bar food then restaurant proper which will be gastro food and also Chinese menu.

Surprised that the Southpour question referenced Reverie, maybe shows the author's youth. Used to be The Wine Glass and was where we used for semi illicit drinking when in 6th year of Liberton.
