Bike radar suggests carrying a piece of biro wrapped in duct tape. The purpose of the duct tape is clear but they don't seem to have a purpose for the biro ;-).

If you have access to a something as sophisticated as a Biro, shurely you can bodge a working gear mech...

I once read a tip for jamming the derailleur in position with a twig or the body of a Biro pen, but can't for the life of me find it.

Unless the gear cable has snapped very close to the shifter, you can;

Remove gear cable entirely.

Thread gear cable through the rear stop and "U bend" of outer casing only.

Push the derailleur to an appropriate gear.

Clamp the cable so that the derailleur is held in that gear. (fine tune adjust with barrel a duster).

If you can't get some wire cutters, neatly coil up the big length of gear cable you have left and tie it well up with cable ties / tape / whatever so that there's no danger of it getting in the way and entering the chain or gear or wheels. Tape/tie it on to the stay or your pannier rack, wherever it's not in the way.

If you have a screwdriver on your multitool, crank on the high limit screw to shift the derailleur bodily across the cassette to get a better gear.
