You can still charge your motor car at someone crossing, hoot your horn, etc. without running them over - in my book that would count as "not giving way"

Not giving way to someone crossing the road would be... running them over?

This is what I 'rubbish cycling'ed about last week. Guy ringing his bell at a blind guy crossing the side road into which he was turning.

Can't say I understand what the excact proposition is here so won't be signing just yet.

Not giving way to someone crossing the road would be... running them over? I'm sure there's laws against that (please someone tell me there's laws against that).

"
At the moment rule 170 of the Highway Code states drivers must give way to pedestrians who are already crossing a side road, but this rule is rarely observed and is not directly enforceable by law, says report authors, Phil Jones Associates.
"

Rule 170 and Rule 180 are both essentially altruistic, and although they sound mandatory ("Do not…", "You should…") they don't have legislation behind them.

I think I'm just being thick because there's so many people jumping to support this but I can't see what's different about it. (Also why is the illustration not a junction?)

"Guidance that compels us to treat each other as human beings not obstacles - who wouldn’t want that?

Well said Chris. So many of the things in this world that are wrong would be solved if we just treated each other as equals with the same wish to be safe and happy.

The lack of this rule was one of the things I was most surprised about when I moved from the Netherlands to the UK.
In the Netherlands, the priority of all traffic going straight at junctions is taught to children from a very young age (using the rhyme "rechtdoor op dezelfde weg gaat voor" -- "straight-on on the same road goes first"), and very well adhered to.

On my bicycle I always try to give way to pedestrians going straight but it's harder when I'm driving because they always wait for me. Like a Canadian standoff.

Isn't this already in rule 170? Or is it the difference between 'should' and 'MUST'?

singed & shared.

Spent 6 weeks in Toronto last year and was amazed at the patience shown and lack of agro/stress from drivers.

Sadly I cant see it ever happening here, hopefully I am wrong. It's almost akin to the whole drink-driving mentality in that it will take a generation to be the norm.

fingers crossed.

"
I support the introduction of a universal rule to give way when turning at junctions, to make them simpler and safer for people driving, cycling and walking.
