&#60;p&#62;&#34;Cyclists are urban deer because they are pests who destroy the environment. There are too many of them, and they keep leaping in front of motor vehicles without warning and getting themselves killed. This causes distress for motorists and damage to their vehicles. They only exist in such numbers because rich people like to kill them for sport.&#34;

&#60;p&#62;I chose the title because I’m  recalling a Bicycling Magazine opinion piece which my friend, long time Philadelphia bicycling advocate John Dowlin, wrote some thirty years ago. The title was “Cyclists as Urban Deer”.  &#60;/p&#62;
&#60;p&#62;Dowlin’s premise was that cyclists in urban areas, like deer in rural areas, are vulnerable, and deserve special attention and caution. He went on to make the point that the presence of cyclists is a measure of the health of the urban transportation system.&#60;/p&#62;
&#60;p&#62;&#34;&#60;/p&#62;
