It is sad.. I reckon this stretch of path is no more than 1m wide.
Yes, better than it was, but I fear that off-road cycling will be deemed Solved in that vicinity for the long term.
A real shame since it could be a really popular route for kids cycling to school in Tranent from the surrounding villages.

I cycled down the path by the A702 from Flotterstone yesterday. It's down to about 30cm width in most places now as vegetation has encroached and actual earth has built up.

There were workmen clearing it just before the Steading Inn, but this kind of path just gets impassable quickly. So sad.

National guidance on the design of shared use facilities can be found in Cycling by Design 2010:

http://www.transport.gov.scot/report/j185500-06.htm#sharedcycleways

Absolute minimum width is meant to be 2m, although the absolute, absolute minimum is 1.5m (don't you just love UK cycle design guidance - where even the absolute minimum can be safely ignored).

Looks fairly typical to me - there are examples elsewhere with poor design for real-life use.

I tend to avoid these unless conditions dictate otherwise - (e.g horrendous cross-wind)

This is a brand new shared use path between Ormiston and Tranent (they're still working on the Ormiston end).
Might be hard to see from the pic, but to me it seems borderline dangerous to be calling this shared use.
It's really narrow to the extent I doubt if 2 bikes going in opposite directions would be able to pass each other. I certainly wouldn't send my kids down there any time soon.

Anyone else know if there are particular guidelines the council needs to adhere to to be able to call something shared use?

I just feel like a great idea has been taken (off-road Ormiston-Tranent path) and completely ruined in implementation.
