The replacement is meant to be the basement of the old business school, but someone thought it'd be a great idea to not have swipe card access but instead just a lock that you have to email to get the code for (and not even a notice saying where to get the code!), so it's poorly used (plus, getting inside is a faff as Marshall Street is closed and access from Bristo Sq is all pedestrians and fences). </p> http://citycyclingedinburgh.info/bbpress/topic.php?id=17495#post-244204 Wed, 08 Mar 2017 09:38:32 +0000 SRD 244204@http://citycyclingedinburgh.info/bbpress/ <p>Secure parking is okay, but not great. the lockup nearest my work is a pain to get to. </p> <p>Security removes bikes periodically, but not often enough. </p> <p>They acknowledge need for more racks, but bike usage really seems to outstrip rack installation. I had for some months been locking my folder on the outside of a bit of railing that I thought was out of everyone's way. But then some other folk started locking their full size bikes to the stair side of the railing (which makes it a little dfficult to reach the railing - except technically it's more like a fence, than a rialing - designed to keep people from falling, not to help you up and down the stairs). but anyway, I thought this was inconsiderate and have been mostly locking my bike elsewhere - no easy feat unless you arrive at 8am. </p> <p>Tonight, as I left on my bike, I saw a guy fiddling with a fancy mud-guard on this inauspiciously parked road bike. it looked odd, so I said 'excuse me, is that your bike'. to which he replied yes. Then, when i questioned this, he went off on a rant about people leaving bikes in public places meant it was now public property. Meanwhile he ripped off the mud guard, told me to leave him alone, that he was having a bad day and walked off, still giving me grief. </p> <p>I should have taken a picture of him, but I was feeling more than a bit intimidated. </p> <p>He had what sounded to me like an irish accent, very close-cropped hair, neat clothes, and a cap. He implied he worked at the uni, but I'd never seen him before. </p> <p>It was a very odd encounter. I'll be parking my bike well out of the way. I don't think he was looking at it, but you never know. I'll also mention it to security. </p>
