"
HEARSES have been banned from driving through Holyrood Park because they are judged to be "commercial"
"

vehicles,http://edinburghnews.scotsman.com/weirdoddandquirkystories/Hearses-included-in-Holyrood-Park.6756209.jp

Would have thought they would be an ideal way of slowing down the traffic...

Though there was some story recently about 'funerals lead to road rage'.

Since bikes are traffic, are we asking for motorised traffic to be banned? Personally, my ride down the Royal Mile in the morning when it is open for delivery lorries is safer than my ride home when I have to slalom around tourists and buskers.

"Driving through Holyrood Park is fare play again for taxis"

"TAXIS are to be allowed back into Holyrood Park after Historic Scotland performed an embarrassing U-turn on a controversial ban."

Anth Oi! I live in Duddingston and I'd be quite happy to see the park closed off!

We know... but you're an evolved Duddingstonian.

Personal interest and traffic alterations always have pros and cons.

For example when Princes Street closed we had a regular bus service at the foot of our close - so the tram works for us were good ;-)

For many years I've thought that our street should be pedestrianised but then it may become noisier. So in some ways the existing mix of parked Ferraris, open top buses and taxis may be better in some ways...
We have some very loud tour guides...!

But I'm all for closing it off as a fast through route The Grassmarket approach seems to work as we still need access for deliveries.

I drove through Duddingston Village once last year and it was a fairly horrendous experience. Due to parked cars there is only room for one lane of traffic for much of the time.

Time and time again drivers would follow traffic into a narrow section of road without waiting to see if there was space for them at the other end of the restriction. The usual blinkered, think-only-of-myself attitude that some many drivers have.

It quickly became grid locked. Not helped by most poeple not having much of a clue about how big their car actually is.

You see a similar thing in Queensferry all the time.

I think we are confusing residents of Duddingston and Duddingston Village.

Though presumably it was some of the former who objected to the road into Bingham being called Duddingston Row.

Yes it would be most inconvenient if the good people of Duddingston Village* couldn't cut through the park to get to Victor Hugo's that little bit quicker.

<strike>I wonder if they've tried cycling?</strike> Stupid, retorical question.

One commentator said The park should be open to people to visit and drive through, but it should not be an arterial route.

And that sums up the problem.

Traffic is everyone else's cars. When you live in Duddingston the park is your own private expressway to the city.

All covered last year in the (soon to be revived?) City Cycling archive. The park authority have the stats which suggest it will only get busier unless they decide that park and urban expressway are incompatible.

Us EBC lycra louts seem to get regular abuse from motorists on Duddingston Road W as we head back into town for tea and cake via the park.

Had one eejit in a Freelander wind down his window and drive alongside us delivering a lecture about how we should be in single file and not in his way. He dissapeared when a counter-lecture was delivered about what the highway code actually says about how many abreast you should cycle and how to pass a group of cyclists.

"

TRAFFIC could be banned from Holyrood Park under new measures being considered in the wake of safety fears.
Residents in Duddingston Village say increasing numbers of vehicles have led to road safety concerns and a rising number of road rage incidents.

Duddingston Village Conservation Society has called for an existing ban on commercial vehicles to be enforced, but has stopped short of calling for Holyrood Park to be closed to all traffic.
