Funnily enough, my driving instructor's car had a random scrap of paper visible in the rear window, for the "reversing around a corner" manoeuvre (this was supposed to give you the skills to parallel park)...

I remember having to get a friend to (illegally*) park my mother's car because I couldn't...

*illegally in the sense that she wasn't insured to drive it, not in the sense that we were parking somewhere we shouldn't.

"I do wish I'd had to learn how to parallel park"

Mt driving instructor had strategically placed stickers on the rear windscreen, and rear side window, which allowed you to judge reversing round corners, and parallel parking.

For reversing round corners the strategy was to keep the sticker in the rear windscreen in the middle of the kerb, and for parallel parking you started turning the steering wheel at the first sticker, and straightened at the second one.

Biggest issue I had was that my first car had no stickers to judge these things, so I basically had to learn again.

"pull up on the right-hand side of the road, reverse for 2 car lengths and rejoin the traffic"

Surely this should be an illegal manoeuvre, not a taught and tested one?

I don't remember having to do any "independent driving" at all - I think the whole of my test was directed turn by turn. This was in 1990. I also didn't have to parallel park (though my sisters did) - I do wish I'd had to learn how to parallel park (I managed to make a meal of parking in a large and completely empty layby at the weekend...)

I had read the release but stand corrected - one fault every 2.6 minutes - that'll be okay then.

When I were a lad (violins off) people failed on only one or two comparatively minor things wrong.

The 'driving licence is a human right' attitude makes it harder for the police/court system to withdraw licences or demand retests.

The problem with the driving test is that it doesn't eliminate incompetent drivers.

A test that you only have to pass once and can be sat an infinite number of times is more about giving a sense of entitlement to drivers than removing those from the system who are incapable of driving safely.

The changes make far more sense if you read the actual DVSA press release:

https://www.gov.uk/government/news/driving-test-changes-4-december-2017

Like the fact the driving test actually involves 40 minutes of driving - which will not change.

"Driving test: Learners must be able to use sat navs"

Well that's the change that's making the headlines.

Remains to be seen if 'new' test is better/harder and results in more considerate drivers.

"

"Much has changed since the first driving test was taken in 1935, and it must be right that the test evolves, just as the cars we drive are themselves changing to incorporate ever more driver assist technology such as inbuilt sat nav systems.

"Novice drivers need to demonstrate the right skills and driving style to cope with the new environment."

"

I'm sure it was more than 10 when I took mine!

"

and complete 20 minutes of independent driving rather than 10

"

http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/amp/39594852

I suppose allowing "only" 15 driving faults in 20 minutes is technically an improvement over allowing 15 in 10 minutes as at present in that the candidate has to be careful for longer.

But still pathetic.

If I was taking part in any activity and getting something wrong every 1.3 minutes I think I'd give up.
