The central part of the carriageway only needs to be one car-width wide for bikes and the occasional motor.</p> <p>On the bridge itself, people want to linger, take photos, cross over, etc. - this should be shared (with bikes going at &lt;12mph).</p> <p>I'm not sure how best to limit bike speeds on the bridge itself. Part of the reason why the people living in that house have incidents with cyclists is that they clearly don't believe cyclists should be there. I've seen them just let the dog run out of the front door and cross to the car park opposite.<br /> The chicane is supposed to be a temporary trial ending last December IIRC. It is certainly getting to be a joke with it being moved on a daily basis. The original gap was ok, but then it started being narrowed (presumably by the dog walkers) so that you virtually had to stop, and then cyclists would open it up again etc. If they need to have a chicane then it needs to be permanent. Which I can sympathise with, because it is a tempting hill to whizz down (not that I do, because I know there's a narrow bridge at the bottom). An then she spoiled her case by saying that "people from the council" had come and done speed checks and clocked cyclists doing "70-80 miles an hour" down the hill. Which is obviously ludicrous (pro cyclists on closed roads get up to about 60mph...). So I said I didn't believe her about that and of course that meant that she thought I didn't believe or sympathise with her about anything (remember I'm with a bike and in lycra). I wish I'd said to her that that sort of hyperbole doesn't help her case at all... To be honest, you are not going to slow down cyclists going <em>past </em>that house by putting a barrier/chicane <em>after</em> the house. You'd slow people by putting a chicane halfway down the hill; but you can't do that because it would stop people driving to the car park at the bottom...</p> <p>I bumped the plastic things across so that no one would be tempted to cycle through the gap where the burnt out plastic was. </p>
