If she's not a regular cyclist, then sit bone pain may just be muscles getting exercise they're not used to...

To my shame I was still feeling POP yesterday.

Does Mrs G cycle her own bike regularly? What saddle does she have on that? I know it is mostly your Brompton, but could you use that saddle too?
If she's not a regular cyclist, then sit bone pain may just be muscles getting exercise they're not used to...

I used whatever saddle came with my Brompton 10 years ago until it fell to bits, and then put an old one I happened to have on - it is big and fat and squashy and fine for the sort of riding I do (in non-cycling clothes). Now that saddle is falling to bits as well and I'm trying to decide what to replace it with!

I have the telescoping seatpost, and have a spare upper seatpost (and Pentaclip), because I was experimenting with different saddles. I wanted to compare each with the original saddle, and didn't want to alter its position.

As it happens, I eventually ditched the original Brompton saddle (the 'modern' one) because the stitching around the edge cut me to pieces. I used the memory foam pad sitty-on thing that Edinburgh Bicycle had to find out how far apart my sit bones actually were. I tend to a 143mm width saddle, but long term recumbent riding means all saddles hurt me. Some just hurt a bit less than others.

Mrs G is welcome to try my dormant Specialized Lithia Gel saddle which I want to love but don't. She might also try my Brooks B17 S, which isn't my shape at all. More unsaddlely than anything else is my Moon Saddle, which I also wanted to love but found it needed a more upright riding position than I was able to arrange.

This may be more information that Mrs Greenroofer wants or needs http://www.casquette.co.uk/know-how/2017/4/22/saddle-lore (chaps - not for you).

I have a Brooks B17 on my Brompton which is fine for me but everybody's undercarriage is different. Generally for an upright riding position, a wider saddle is better. The more recent Bromptons should be able to take any saddle now - with the older ones, you need a pentaclip to adapt the saddle fitting.

@gkgk - you didn't dream it! https://bromptonjunction.com/shop/brompton-black-saddle-167mm-width/

I never knew that such a thing existed, so didn't think to look.

I read that the extending seatpost option allows easy removal of the seat and extension tube bit of the seatpost. Maybe then you could have two saddles and switch them as required. Downsides are cost, weight and reduced security but then those 3 were never the brompton's strongest aspects anyway!

Brompton offers a wider saddle option now, I think, though it's possible I dreampt that.

I have a Brompton. It has a standard Brompton saddle, from about four years ago, which looks the same as the current one. We would like Mrs Greenroofer to be able ride it sometimes, as it would mean she could do multi-modal transport when she wants to (even if that is mainly taking the car for a service).

Mrs G has tried it once, and found the saddle so exquisitely painful that she's not willing to ride it again. We had a delicate conversation about what was painful, and it seems to be her sit bones rather than ...erm... anything else.

So do you have a Brompton and lady-shaped/spaced sit bones? Do you have any advice for Mrs G?
