I don't think it will be a huge problem unless the cogs are really badly worn, which is probably unlikely?

Two different bikes sounds like the solution?

A chain significantly newer than the teeth it's supposed to drive will skip. If that would be a problem then it's only five minutes to swap the cassettes, depending on how glaggy they are.

If there is only light wear you can normally get away with it. Once the drivetrain has been used a lot then you get problems sticking a new cassette into the system.

"there might be an issue with the chain and different cassettes, with different levels of wear"

True, but if bikes get similar use unlikely to be much of a problem.

Might encourage you to replace chains before everything else wears too much.

MrSrd and I seem to have been given different advice at different points. Would appreciate your collective wisdom.

Are there issues that make swapping wheels on and off a bike a problem?

MiniSrd's been doing go-ride and MrSrd ends up swapping her cross tyres for road tyres frequently. tonight we were in a rush, and I suggested that instead of swapping her tyres, he just put my wheels (with cross tyres on), onto her bike (they're both 700).

We'd similarly been discussing buying a second set of wheels, so as to make life easier generally (as folk do with spiked tyres etc).

But MrSrd thought that he'd been advised not to do this - that there might be an issue with the chain and different cassettes, with different levels of wear. (Maybe he'll come along and explain this better).

Anyway, is there any reason we should swap tyres rather than wheels?
