Ah yes, I hear there is black art in the biotransformation stuff, even more so than classical organic synthesis. That was never my field and I was profoundly mediocre at it but sometimes there was no option and when I was really stuck I'd ask our mutual acquaintance what to do. He always knew and was very generous in sharing his expertise.

@IwratS - Organic chemistry, specifically biotransformations, but I wasn't very good, hence jumping ship for IT...

Sounds about right - if a car was going fast towards the t junction they would have hit the diesel as they tried to brake, and gone straight into the stream of traffic on the main road.

Nasty.

There was a crash there this morning around 8am, a car going west along Commercial St looked like it had been T-boned by a car from Dock St and pushed across to the bus stop with the front wheel pushed back under the passenger footwell.

@gembo

I know a guy who spent ten years in prison after trying to get diesel out of some stuff for an acquaintance. Nightmare, that one.

Good advice indeed, but I am tending towards:

3) Use as excuse to fit rack and buy Ortlieb panniers...

Unless the rucksack can be dry cleaned (you'd need to ask them, I'd guess not) it'll be tricky to get the diesel out.
If your washing machine doesn't do it I'd suggest letting nature have a go, assuming you have another rucksack to use in the meantime;

1) Tie the rucksack to the end of a groyne at Portobello at low tide and leave it a couple of days. (Mate of mine used to strip the paint off frames that way. Amazing cleaning power.)

2) Bury the rucksack for a few weeks and let the soil bacteria at it. There is a microbe willing to metabolise pretty much any substance you can imagine, including diesel.

Morning All, a brief warning for anyone in Leith this morning (Monday the 8th); there is a large diesel spill at the Dock Street / Commercial Street Junction, tailing about 30 metres back up Dock Street. I have reported to council, but it may take a while to resolve. The fact it is on the cobles makes it even more dangerous.

On a completely unrelated note, does anyone know how to get diesel off of a Deuter Bike One backpack?
