I was unimpressed to find no bike parking at all in the 'plaza' sort of space that has a PY-franchise at the north side. i was meeting a friend there and had hoped to lock up tandem which had a child bike on top, and be able to watch it out the window. instead, had to wander around in snow and ice, find a rack, lock both bikes on, and then get back to my meeting.i should have just locked it to itself, and no one would have been stupid enough to try and ride it off, but i wasn't thinking straight.

@snowy, I'm quite busy this week but will see if I can try a different strategy. They seem slow responding to twitter, so when I'm at the gym I might scout about and look for their offices.

I find a f2f chat to be more helpful when pleading the case!

Not 100% sure which block they operate from......

Yes, the occupancy of all the racks in the area has been steadily increasing. And from about 5pm a lot of people just use the nearby handrail as the overflow...I've been known to do this myself but I always feel a bit guilty about it ever since I saw someone coming down the steps who really would have benefited from a handrail that wasn't festooned with bikes. Some racks in sight of the extensive gym windows would be perfect.

@snowy - yes, what I asked qmile management to do was place some racks next to the gym entrance (i.e. the other side!).

They responded telling me there was lots of bike parking nearby.....they are not wrong, but it's mostly uncovered. When it's raining I chain up at Sainsbury's - which is ok but they are always busy.

It's a 2 minute walk, so not a problem, but it's not convenient or in any way sensible.

Just a brief update that for the Q-mile Pure Gym, the closest Sheffield stands are on the north side of the building (the side facing Lauriston Place), but at least they're 20 yards away from the street.

I'm a member of Puregym and I tend to just chain it up on the bannister at the Lauriston Pl steps.
For the length of time I'm in there (~45 mins - 1 hr ) I'm naively hoping it won't do any lasting damage to my bike but if anyone's aware of any better options I'm all ears :-)

"I was thinking of bike parking in/on gym controlled space (but this is not the real world)."

Me too. I know that there is an underground car park behind PY, but in my naiveté I had hoped that each large building or street in the development would have one (and that they would have secure bike parking) !

The bike racks at Sainsburys are actually pretty good as they are sheltered. I appreciate that OSM (correctly) shows a lot of bike parking in the surrounding area, but unless its covered / partially covered it loses a fair bit of utility.

You'd think that gyms would have good bike parking, but I suppose most people drive to them...

To be fair to them, according to OSM there are 14 bike racks outside the building, with another 50 or so elsewhere on Quartermile. We could query whether this is enough, or whether more of them should be covered, but there are places with far less provision.

How much influence the gym has on the bike rack situation is another matter, as well.

Cycle parking at the Pure Gym in Gorgie is apalling. There are 3 stands in a dimly lit corner which is in a bit of dip and car fumes seem to accumulate.

I did consider joining for the winter but I cba walking there, driving to the gym really grates and the cycle parking well....

@Frenchy - cheers that's helpful, I might take a swing by later to check. I was under the impression that there were only uncovered ones there.

There are/were some covered bike racks at the hospital, which is a bit closer than Sainsbury's. [EDIT: Google Maps link is refusing to show the right place. It's the main door, just to the left of the blood doning entrance. Bike racks are on the right, just inside.

Not sure when the doors are open, so you'd probably want to check your bike's not getting locked inside.

I'm thinking about joining Pure Gym, and rode along there to scope it out.

Seems most bike minded people just chain up bikes on the steps up to Lauriston Place - uncovered so "ok" if not ideal in current weather conditions.

Looks like my only option if it's raining is chaining up a short walk away outside the Sainsburys local up from PY.

Anyone got any helpful thoughts?
