It's about 17 years since I did that in Edinburgh, but with hard work it did prove possible to find rooms. Find advert, ring them, visit, find another advert, ring them, visit, find yet another advert... and so on. Took a few days of walking the city each time but things worked out. The smallest/cheapest room wasn't much more than a broom cupboard, but it became home for 6 months despite that - and this gave enough time for other things to sort themselves out.

Of course technology has moved on - but it has to be the case that there will still be odd arrangements out there if you have the strength of spirit to stick with the room hunting.

Not much fun at all though.

Thanks for the tips everyone, I hadn't thought of the Greek consulate! She's been making most of her contacts through the Greek cafe on West Richmond Street, which is how she got most of her cleaning jobs. Finding an older person who wants someone to live in the house would be ideal.

spareroom is a great tip, there's even one older person on there at the moment advertising for someone so hopefully that will work out. I've also told her to go to speak to someone at Shelter, they will hopefully have some good practical advice.

FWIW I have rented out my spare room to older people in the past via http://spareroom.co.uk. I have stated I prefer an older person and my flatmates have been 50+. However as you say most flat shares are for 20 somethings and it may take a little searching to find something.

It sounds like the sort of situation where an older person who is struggling to look after their house alone, but doesn't want to downsize, needs a live in lodger who does some caring chores like shopping and cleaning for low rent. I have heard of things in London but not sure what to google...

Hi all,

a friend of ours recently moved to Edinburgh from Greece, where she was unable to get a job and the general situation is pretty dire. She moved in to her daughter's room in a student flat and has managed to get a few part time jobs, I think she does fifteen hours a week in a restaurant plus four or five cleaning jobs, but she doesn't earn enough to get somewhere by herself and the landlord wants her to move out of her daughter's room. She's responded to adverts for a few flat shares, but these have always been with young people who didn't really want a middle aged Greek lady cramping their style. She now needs to find somewhere to live by the end of the month. Does anyone have any tips?

In particular, does anyone know of any non-student shared houses looking for new tenants? Or if there's a site advertising these things that isn't heavily dominated by people in their early twenties?

Does anyone know any older people with a spare room who would like to have someone live there, and perhaps help out a little?

Does anyone know of good organisations who could help her?

Thanks for your help!
