Indeed Amir, I always wonder about reporting glass, hoping the coucil will sweep it up but in the full knowledge that it will be replaced/resmashed very soon afterwards. The Cramond Prom is an example. Lots of sparkly bits on the prom and you know it is not quarts as when you remount the road, the shiney particles dissapear.

Coming off the Newcastle ferry this am, we guided a pair of Dutch guys to the centre of Newcastle. Whilst they we reasonably impressed by the cycle path, they were shocked by the amount of glass. The area around Wallsend was particularly badly affected. They said they'd never seen so much (in total! ).

It is a hugely under reported aspect of cycling in the UK. Glass on the paths in Edinburgh and Midlothian sometimes just makes you want to go on the road.

I'm a fan of a deposit on plastic as well.

Glass is bad for punctures and getting into cheap shoes but ultimately rather inert. Abandoned plastics are bad for the whole ecosystem.

If one is investing millions into machines and building modifications to handle returns (it requires a dedicated room), one additional machine handling both sorts of material is a trivial extra.

I did enjoy the fact that in the Netherlands a couple of years ago I could by 24 bottles of beer in a plastic crate for about 11 Euro. Then feed the crate of empties through a machine in the supermarket and get a 3 Euro voucher off my next crate of beer.

Or reusable bottles like The Netherlands. Do away with glass once and for all.
