That's very true, @chdot.

I've lost count of the number of times people have told me about a cycling event or happening and I've explained that it was coordinated or arranged by the members of either CCE or POP.

CCE members will organise and take action if they think something needs to be done; EEN commenters just eternally bump their gums and blame Lesley Hinds.

"I guess they think we're important?"

'We' are - individually and, randomly and in evolving/morphing, collective ways.

People on CCE do stuff.

Also (perhaps more importantly) think/debate/suggest stuff.

There are a number of EEN commentators who ahve nothing better to do with their time than to read/quote and 'comment' on our comments here and elsewhere. I guess they think we're important?

I see DDKP of EEN comments fame has been quoting bits of my post. Wonder which member of CCE he/she is?

(And no, DDKP isn't me before anyone asks!!)

Seems to have been a case of "will no-one think of the swans?" on FB, along with ludicrous claims that the patrons will fill the WoL with rubbish. (Those making that claim really need to open their eyes to the many years of accumulated filth and rubbish already filling the water there).

Shame that it was rejected. Maybe he should go ahead and build it anyway, as Martin Wishart did when he brazenly and openly added a further extension to the rear of our building without planning permission. We contacted the council to report it, Planning took a look and agreed it was illegal but let him keep it as (and I quote) 'he's an asset to Edinburgh'.

Fury did not begin to explain how we residents felt....

Seemed like a good move to me - along with removal of cars from the area...

Somewhat baffled at the blanket refusal.

The basin there (which is entirely artificial thanks to the lock gates on the outer harbour, it should be tidal) is pretty much sterile of wildlife, you get the odd swan or seagull floating by but there's not much for the birds which prefer the sections further up the river where the water is shallower and they can reach the bottom to feed, and they can more easily waddle in and out of the water. It mainly just accumulates shopping trolleys and floating rubbish under the bridges.

The area was never, ever "gentrified" until recently and in its current state only conserves some selected bricks and mortar and not anything of the spirit or overall character of the area. It was a heaving, bustling commercial centre with ships and people and business going on as far as the eye could see.

The river there is entirely man made, and was made for the sole purpose of putting floating things in it and attaching them to the quayside. So why not!?

The real magic of vibrant market and riverside areas I think comes from the lighting. And it's not the sort of lighting you can 'plan'

When you have tens of individual traders all putting up their own slightly different strings of lights, their own signs outside their shops, it's the mismatch of all these really small light sources that really seems to bring areas to life.

I like the idea. But I hope the council will charge rent for the space to reinvest in `placemaking'. Presumably it will earn a lot of money for the pub on sunny days.

Callum is my neighbour. Lovely bloke. He and his girlfriend had a mad idea to buy the Malt & Hops years ago when the previous owner put it up for sale, and they have made a real success of the place. I think the pontoon will be a great idea - it's designed to be removable is it proves unsuccessful (unlike the listing, rusting eyesore that was Cruz) and it has been designed by Groves-Raines Architects, who did a stunning job of restoring Lambs House and turning it into their home, architecture practice and Norwegian Consulate, so it should look pretty smart.

Love the nimbys using 'it'll cause litter in the WoL' as an excuse to object. Those same people who've done sod all about the piles of rubbish in the water down by the Shore in the 27 years I've lived there, and never been bothered by it until now.

The 'I Love Leith' Facebook page is getting the same NIMBY nonsense, but luckily those who like the idea are more numerous.

Is 'conservation area' a byword for 'sterile car park'?

Because the waterfront really isn't doing anything for the community right now
