We drove down and parked in a nice we residential spot in Tynemouth. Ate a decent italian restaurant in Tynemouth rail/metro station, then an easy cycle from there up to the ferry terminal.

As others have said its simple to drop down to the river and have a really pleasant ride along the north side of the Tyne to the Ferry port. We left from there last year, enjoy. There are some great paths out of Ijmuiden. Enjoy, we are in Eindhoven the first week of July, but are travelling out of Hull as this ferry was cheaper when we booked our accommodation out of Canvas Holidays, based in Dunfermline.

If you have time call in a the Free Trade Inn, it serves great beer!
12 St Lawrence Rd, Newcastle upon Tyne NE6 1AP

Or if you want some great local food, call in at the Cookhouse. Its a new venture in two converted Steel Containers, and has been featured on the telly recently. All the food is sourced locally and tastes great. Its not far off your route and is open 9:30 to 3:30, Mon - Sat.

It's OK as b-t-t says. Allow time though as it has usual path characteristics of ups and downs at missing bridges. You'll see other people using it.

The route to the ferry terminal is sign-posted all the way, is mostly off-road, and is really a very pleasant start to a holiday.

Hmm, it's on the way to Tynemouth I suppose?

Mostly annoying as I have to build in an extra hour and a half in case I get lost - plus on way back, in case disembarkation takes ages (I have from time to time been left till absolutely last as a cyclist...)

Pah. Got a ferry booked from North Shields to the Netherlands next month, but now as I look at train tickets I discover that the Tyne & Wear metro trains don't allow bikes. They have a trial running, but it doesn't cover the stretch of line out to the DFDS terminal. Always nice to start a bike tour with a ten mile zigzag through an unfamiliar urban/industrial hinterland. Quite tempted to drive down instead...

Trial leaflet language isn't exactly welcoming - I count two "must never"s and four "cannot/can't"s https://www.nexus.org.uk/sites/default/files/Cycle%20Trial%20Leaflet_V14%20FINAL%20Extended%20ongoing%20trial%202017_0.pdf
Definitely a sense of powerful reluctance!
