"Labour councillor"

Only in name, it would appear. He's just as much of a reactionary girner as the Tory councillors.

"He's really a Tory in Labour clothing! "

Certainly starting to look that way, on certain issues.

"Can we not get Comunity Service people to pull them by hand?"

Apparently this is not the Siberian gulag, neither is it the Deep South chain gang. Community Service folk are not keen on just using their charges as slave labour to replace paid council jobs, it seems.

"

A Labour councillor has hit out at the city’s new administration over how it is tackling weeds, calling the problem a “disgrace” to the Capital.

The criticism was dished out by new Colinton and Fairmilehead councillor Scott Arthur, who said residents were right to be concerned about the issue.

In an online blog, Cllr Arthur said it was a disgrace that visitors arriving in the Capital would be greeted with weeds reaching “several feet” in height.

The weeds are growing through the cracks in the tarmac on roads near me which could lead to massive expenditure, but won't as the Council will never be able to afford to remedy the roads - enjoy them while ye may because they will never be better surfaced than they are now. Next winter should finish my street off.

The much bigger issue is the weed growth completely choking the sivers, and what can be seen is only the tip of the iceberg. Remedying this is going to involve massive works to clear the underground infrastructure, which again will not be seen as affordable - until the damage from flooding becomes intolerable, which can't be too far away, relatively speaking.

Agreed - but the weeds ("plants in the wrong place") along the edges of pavements can be lovely. I've started taking pictures of them when they're in flower. Certainly nicer than the post-weedkiller desert...

Some (suburban) pavements near me in leafy Murrayfield have large weeds coming up through cracks in the concrete (poured not slabs) and that combined with the distortion from pavement parking means that it's really quite dangerous for my elderly neighbours.
Weeds in the gutter I can tolerate; weeds a foot high concealing a 3" pavement trip hazard, not so good.

Weeds grow on cobbled streets because the street cleaning machines cannot access parts of the surface due to parked <strike>cars</strike> trinity tractors.

Solution - ban all parking on cobbled roads.

I've never quite grasped why schools don't just have a few sheep in the grounds to keep the grass mown. Be a brilliant learning aid, especially if they had the chance to cook and eat them at some point.

Whilst it's clearly a sign of council cost-cutting, I like the sections of the parks that are being left to grow wild such as the chunk of Bruntsfield Links between Leamington Walk and Warrender Park Terrace at the Marchmont Road end.

In related news, apparently the council is now deploying autonomous grass cutters: https://twitter.com/SunshineOnLeaf/status/882347451478421504

The 'locals' quoted moaning about the West End turns out to be the Tory councilor for 'Portobello Craigmillar' who seems much more concerned with Portobello than Craigmillar. I don't know if the people of Craigmillar are worried about weeds in the West End or not.

One of the newly elected Tory councillors for Craigentinny & Duddingston is John McLellan, former editor of the chip wrapper.
