"What gives?"

Everything, eventually.

(Even steel!)

Not sure this is the thread for such material failures (or suggestions of).

Yes, aluminium steerers should be considered of as disposable items with a limited lifespan, even more so if you've got a big stack of spacers on them.

I've seen it happen on aluminium bikes a couple times @IWRATS. First was a old uni friend who was riding his bike down bruntsfield links and lifted his front wheel to manual the speed bumps, at which point his front forks just fell out. He lost part of his ear if I remember rightly. The other was an aluminium BMX that had been sat outside for too long.

front fork snapping in two inside the bike frame

Good lord. That shouldn't happen. Carbon fibre presumably?

By email -

Hi,

I am not registered on the site but do check it every day for local updates.

On Friday a work colleague and friend of mine who cycles didn’t turn up for work and hadn’t contacted anyone. On the off chance something had happened I checked the forum and someone, I can’t remember their name sorry, had posted about a cyclist being down at Newbridge. This allowed us to target our search and it turned out after contact with the police that this was indeed my friend.

Just wanted to thank the forum and let you know he is ok, it appears to have been a mechanical failure (front fork snapping in two inside the bike frame). He spent Friday night in the ERI. Has a few stitches around his eye and some facial fractures. A further scan today revealed a fractured skull so once the swelling goes down he will be getting a plate fitted a week today. Would’ve been much worse had he not been wearing his helmet.

Thank you to all again.

Can I also register for the forum, I’m a reader not a poster but the power and value of the forum can’t be underestimated as it helped us find him.

Passed an ambulance attending someone just before the Newbridge roundabout this morning. I assume it was a cyclist as they were in shorts and there was a bike on the ground beside them.

It was on the approach from Broxburn direction and looked pretty bad. There were quite a few people around and a car and van on the verge. Hopefully not as bad as it looked and they make a quick recovery.
