I book all my tickets through the Scotrail site, which still lets me book bikes on Virgin Trains (or it did a fortnight ago, when I booked a bike space to Alnmouth for August)

I'm just back from a trip using Virgin. It was quite a hassle having to phone for a reference number for the bike before booking the seat, there being no point having the seat if no bike space. Despite the lengthy verbal process to confirm my e-mail address nothing was sent to confirm the reference numbers(which had to be jotted down), neither of which were recognised by the Virgin system at Waverley where one needs to get the ticket to attach to the bike.

The lady at Waverley just redid a bike booking but staff at Scarborough could not do anything and I had to take the chance on not getting aboard a two bike train. Fortunately the guard seemed to be OK with four bikes on the train.

Virgin staff were generally very good, particularly when a connection was missed at York due to late arrival of my train from Scarborough.

The booking system, however, has considerable room for improvement.

Got by email

"

Calling all cyclists

It’s not currently possible to book a spot for your bicycle online, but you can still book space. If you want to bring your wheels, call us on 0345-722-5111 and we’ll get it sorted.

"

This is because they have a new website that they want people to sign up for.

They have been running it in parallel for a while.

The 'normal' site is still there and I assume it's still possible to book bikes.

No idea how long before it gets removed/replaced.
