Impressive attention to detail. Travellers in the Alford area will be reassured that the map reveals they are close to excellent rail links at the Alford Valley Station:

Ferries missing from @OrdnanceSurvey road data. I'm working on it...

"Note the map isn't handling the islands right,"

I'd assumed this was based on excellent ferry links to train stations? No roads in the sea.

You'd need a correlation of distance from nearest station against population density to really do this right.

Note the map isn't handling the islands right, plus has some heritage stations (e.g. Deeside).

Seems to be based on road distance not 'crow fly', which is obviously good.

I'm assuming "number of postcodes" is a proxy for population density, as these tend to be organised around the number of dwellings. That said, census data should be available, there are even maps of population density. This one courtesy of Wiki, shows North East Scotland poorly served by rail relative to population.

pretty cool - maybe next step (for someone far cleverer than me) would be to weight it by population density.
