Festival organisers have had some communication with Spokes re cycling arrangements proposed during this year's Festival. More info soon.
Also, re the fines, some parts of town it is cheaper to pay a daily fine than to pay to park daily - so a plasterer working on McDonald's told me he does!

Yes, fines should be a certain % of your monthly income, also with a minimum fine.

Not this morning - insufficient gap between the barriers at the Hanover Street end, insufficient space to pass another along the cobbleway and too many drink-delivery trucks at the Frederick Street end, unless the tricyclist/betrailerèd/velomobilicular were sufficiently able-bodied to do some kerb-hoicking (or possibly use the pelican crossings' dropped kerbs).

I only went along it today to see what was happening and if Hill or Thistle Streets were involved.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GEy4msCkyYs&feature=youtu.be

I only need-ish to go along it (or somewhere parallel) once every month or so when I'm on the early rota. If I go home that way it's never because I'm in a rush, but I'll start avoiding it both ways if it looks like there'll be a risk of a narrow channel containing broken glass once all the pop-up artisanal gin distilleries are fully operational. There's also the risk of feeling compelled to kick barriers back to where they should be when they creep, which can cause further delays in the morning.

Westbound: Hanover to Frederick is over the opposite side of the cobble-parking. Castle to Charlotte is along the normal roadway. The large truck delivering intoxicants which was blocking the end of Frederick Street from kerb to kerb is presumably temporary.

The sign at the east end of the westbound lane at Hanover Street is vague, but you go through the barriers then to the right of the diagonal hoarding, diagonally over the cobbles, watching out for large stacks of rolls of roofing-felt.

@glitterpossum - I've not been there myself, so don't know for sure, but the westbound cycle lane was supposed to be on the north side of the road between Hanover St and Frederick St, although it is accessed from the South side of the road.

It's closed for the entire length of the Assembly Rooms block westbound, no space for cycling. No way past except to push down pavement. Space being used to erect some sort of large geodesic tent but mainly for portakabins, equipment containers and contractors vehicles. I assume all the pop-up craft gin and Drambuie bars are to follow.

The westernmost block (Castle Street to Charlotte Square) has a nice wide contraflow lane on south side of street.

Access from Charlotte Square is possible, even though the right turn filter lane has been blocked by the big sign saying "ROAD CLOSED EXCEPT CYCLISTS". Hashtag facepalm.
