Greenroofer - that is good info to know - the canal towpath in snow I normally avoid but if this keeps up I will need those tyres

Folds - the tricycle is not quite fixed wheel - single speed and the chain locks every so often, the brake is worked by lever and pulley rather than cable (well two metal tubes) the block applies vertically on to the rim (well it no longer reaches)

Took the towpath today from Shandon to Hermiston. An interesting experience, and an opportunity to test out my new spiked tyres.

I found that...

The spiked tyres running at 2.5bar provide awesome levels of grip on flat hard packed snow and on ice. I never managed to spin the back wheel or to instigate any kind of slide.

It's quite hard work cycling on tyres at 2.5 bar

From Shandon to Slateford, there is a huge wide flat track through the snow and it's great for cycling

The aqueduct has a narrow, smooth track across it between two snow banks, and was a pleasanter ride that it usually is.

There are three trees down across the path between Slateford and Kingsknowe

Beyond Kingsknowe the path goes down to single track. Unlike normal single track it has a convex surface with deep snow either side. If you can't keep the bike running down the middle, you end up coming to a grinding halt in powder snow

Once over the bypass, it's easier to push that to try and ride. It's quite pretty though.

Normal ride time to work 30 minutes, speedo usually reads 15 - 18mph. Today (when I caught a glance of the speedo) it was closer to 8mph, and the journey took an hour.

My forearms are all seized up from holding the handlebars too tight.

I'm a tarmac cyclist and am not very good at this off road stuff. I kept having to remember to look ahead and relax, rather than looking at my wheels.

Dead chuffed with the tyres though: they definitely do what they say on the tin!

Yes, I see the logic. Our trike needs a new home actually, if anyone wants a classic 1950s child's tricycle with no braking options (ie you need flat garden or similar) It doesn't fold and takes up space. I am not selling it as I love its look but weans have outgrown it and time to let go

Outside the building I would. Well the 6 speeds I would, perhaps not the SuperLight.

The trike was in the classroom but it doesn't need to be going fast to stay up... indeed for weans not moving is a lot more stable.

Buses reverted to normal route today so instead of picking up 45 in Balerno to Gillespies X-road and running I had a little stroll from Water of Leith Visitor Centre through the winter wonderland - along the river via cemetery, allotments and jail.

I was working in Polmont one winter and the prison officer showed me into a cell with a poor specimen of humanity chittering under his blanket. He had smashed the window to shout across the canal to his "wee burd". The lad asked quite plaintively why his window wasn't being fixed and the suggestion was that as he had smashed it he would have to live with it.

And it was great having the empty roads

I wish A8 / Glasgow / Costorphine / St John's Road stretch was empty. It's still chock full of taxis barelling along as if it was a glorious summers day. I presume they're all heading out to the airport so people can stand and gawp at the "flight cancelled" information screens.

Time to cycle to work on Tuesday, going the quick way, including half a mile of pushing through the residential roads and falling off: 19 minutes.

Time to cycle work on Wednesday, going the longer way using only the main road into town and then out of town: 37 minutes.

By yesterday evening all I wanted to do was go to bed. Having had enough of hauling my bike through the snow, I decided to walk. Time to get to work today: 1 hour. All the <strike>wheel</strike> hikingbootspin and sliding around was hard work on the ankles though, particularly where they'd gritted the pavements and turned the snow into a brown powder that was like quicksand.

Had to bus it today but it wasn't too bad. We had an avalanche last night off our front roof (the back is about to go) and by the time I had dug us and our elderly nieghbour out there wasn't time to run in. Pretty spectacular amount of snow in the front garden now.
