While changing a tube last night I also dug an astonishing amount of wee sharps out of the tyre. Seems to be worse recently.

The tyre in question was a Durano plus (I think) but it's a lot older than 4 weeks! To be fair it was one of the biggest thorns I've ever seen and even marathon pluses are not immune to thorns as I know to my cost.

I've been using the Durano Plus' now for about 4 weeks with ZERO punctures,

also the kevlar strips i put in my Conti's on the road bike, 3x3 hour rides so far and no punctures -

i inspected all the tyres at the weekend and some minor cuts on the front of the duranos, no thorns or any other signs of anything on them - 1 deep cut on the rear of the Contis, about 4mm in length 2mm deep - off center though, its almost a brand new tyre too - but i think i'll keep going on that one.

@Darkerside - no the bike is fine, it's just that a while back, for reasons that made sense at the time, it got a skinny replacement back wheel. I've been riding it like that for about 5 years without problems except when I need to sort out a puncture. But possibly I'm getting more punctures than I might have expected (even adjusted for the amount of blackthorn around here)

Based on my own experience, I would not use a 23-28 tube in 28 tyre except in an emergency. The tube gets extra stressed around the valve and can lead to early failure.

Yes as sheldon and others have said as long as no rubbing from pads or mudguards you can put bigger tyres on rims. I have a 23 mm tyre on front of bike I was on today and a 25 mm on back. Same rims. Prefer 25

Brake pads often crooked, or worn non-linearly.

@gembo, yes - a bad decision made in a hurry several years ago has been biting me ever since.

If I have understood Sheldon Brown correctly, I may get away with a too-wide tyre on a too-narrow wheel as long as the brake pads don't rub the tyre. Actually, that's another can of worms as it turns out my back brakes had sprung out of alignment and one of the pads is now very crookedly worn. Fortunately I never cycle much above a sedate amble so I'll probably get away with it.

@sallyhinch, breaking news on the Schroeder and presta valves.

It sounds now like the wheels might be different widths?

As long as there is clearance it is not a major deal?

You do need tubes that are the same size as the tyres. The tyres do need to fit the rims.

The slime is maybe going to be redundant.

I find whenever I read anything on the Sheldon Brown site, I end up feeling more confused than when I started.

Fortunately the frankenwheel in question is almost worn out, so as soon as I can persuade the bike shop to replace it (he was reluctant at the last service as there was a few months more wear left in it - upselling doesn't really come naturally to Dumfries retailers) I shall start again with a back wheel that's the same width as the front one and tyres and inner tubes to fit. That will leave me with a redundant lightly worn slime inner tube which may be a price worth paying not to have a bike with one schraeder and one presta valve.

@sallyhinch, that can be a problem.

You want an inner tube that has the same number on it as the tyre. It can fall within the range so if you have a tube that goes 700 X 18-25 it obviously works on a tyre that is 23 or 25 (never seen a tyre that is 18)

And

If you have a tyre that is 700x 25-35 it will fit a tyre that is 25 or 28

However what would be useful but ypu do not get is 700 X 23-28

Or maybe you do if you look hard enough?

yeah, there's plenty of clearance (and it's been fine for a couple of years). It just means that the inner tube that fits the wheel doesn't match the inner tube size written on the tyre.

If a 700x28 fits (and doesn't rub the frame) - it's not the wrong size and has been giving you a considerably more comfortable ride than a 23mm tyre.

700C = nominal diameter of the wheel (including tyre)
x28 = 28mm tyre width

Hmm, well having spent the best part of an hour failing to fix a punctured inner tube, I have broken down and bought a slime inner tube and fitted it (hopefully in time for hedge-cutting season).

In the course of this I discovered that I have the wrong sized tyre for my back wheel (the wheel is 700x23C and the tyre is a 700x28, if that makes any sense - fortunately I had taken a photo of both the labelling on the tyre and on the wheel before I went in). This was installed by the bike mechanic who likes to cast aspersions on the bodges perpetrated by my previous bike mechanic.

On the plus side, I've now had lots of practice taking my back wheel on and off

I love working on bikes and I've only ever killed one by clumsiness, though it hasn't actually died yet but it will and it will have been my fault though the person witnessing the death will think it was theirs. I'm not currently a Nazi and I won't ever shout at you or your bike. There may be a deal to be done involving my second and third favourite things; cake and dry humour.

I've just remembered why I hate bike maintenance. Supposedly, the bike is a beautifully simple machine which any fule can fix, but any time you try and actually do something to your bike it turns out to be far more complicated than you first thought.

So, to recap: I can put slime in my inner tubes, as long as it is the right kind of slime and they are the right kind of inner tubes with removable valve cores and I'm careful when pumping them up and I don't mind Nazi mechanics shouting at me.
