Thanks Chrisfl. Everything I can see on streetview appears to be Hermiston too.

At least one mapping company used to deliberately put wrong information, eg non existent streets, on their maps to tell if other companies were copying rather than doing their own research

This is (or was) very common. There's at least one example of the "fake" place becoming a real place: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Agloe%2C_New_York

I have tried in the past to get google maps corrected, but without success, even when google streetview showed that their mapping was wrong, and other sources also had the correct information.

Thanks Gembo - Have messaged the original source of the Harmiston name, and he thinks he saw then name on a sign, presumably the one referenced by Gembo. I'm going to go on a sign hunt on my may home....

Chances are that the 'other' online maps will simply be drawn from Openstreetmap data. Sounds like a typo. You/we could also ask the two contributors who have edited the line - naming it and since naming it.

hmmm the OpenStreetMap Editor that entered the name as Harmiston Way is not local. The OS OpenDats Streetview layer shows the name as Hermiston combined with acsimpsons "local" knowledge and the Hermiston Walk bus stop - I'm fixing up OSM.

I didn't see any signs at the time. It's the same on google, OSM and some other online maps but the HW campus guidebook states Hermiston Walk which I therefore assume is correct.

Is anyone out that way regularly who could check before I go ahead and update OSM.

I see the cycle.street route chrisfl linked to take people across the slip roads of the Gogar Roundabout. It's much nicer to stay on the north of the A8 until the RBS bridge and join GSR directly from the RBS campus.

Why is Harmiston Walk spelt with an A?

Is it spelt that way on signs, or just on OSM?

If the latter, probably a typo. If the former, probably a typo that stuck.

Thanks for the pointers (which I should have read before leaving).

I ended up taking a combination of the routes.

Down Maybury Road pavement (because we were running late and the pavement is the only safe way there) and under the Gateway tunnel

Round the cycle path to the tram stop Toucan (I normally go through the car park but thought I would try the official route)

I then made the mistake of trying to cut onto Lochside View too early and had to cycle up a grass bank beside the Ibis to avoid the stairs.

Up Lochside View and through the (2nd) underpass to GSR.

Pick you the canal to Hermiston House Road and then wait for a gap to cross the A71 and join the campus on Harmiston Walk (sic).

On the return we tried something a little differnt following Hermiston House Road to the end and picking up Gogar Bank before taking GSR down to the "curly" bridge and along the north of the A8.

With the possible exception of crossing the A71 it was all very pleasant on Sunday although I would probably tweak a few bits on a work day. for instance GSR with a loaded tagalong would make me nervous during commute times although perhaps only because I don't ride it regularly.

I would also use Lochside Avenue to access Lochside View next time (Blueth, I don't use the Gyle centre underpass when towing passengers as it requires crossing the potentially busy roundabout at the centre of the car park and brings you out onto the wrong side of Lochside Crescent.)

Gembo, your route would probably be preferable at busy times as it has a controlled crossing of the A71 but I preferred accessing the campus on the north side as you are then traffic free all the way through the campus. I guess it's possible to get to Harmiston Walk from the toucan but I didn't hunt it out.

I would go through the Morrison car park to the underpass below the road through the Gyle area (it's near the filling station) then to the bypass underpass which leaves you almost at your destination.

At top of gogar station road take right turn into hermiston and go past the garage then left through the very chicane widened by CCE then lights across a71 and right on pavement path into Heriot watt campus. Is a suggestion if it makes sense. I see others taking the main road at top of GSR but it is not for me.

On closer inspection cycle streets says I'm going to be spending 20% of my time walking the East Craigs paths which technically aren't legal to cycle and then down the Craigmount steps. It doesn't seem to know about the A8 underpass yet either.

I'm heading to Riccarton Campus tomorrow from East Craigs. Google gives me three options.

1) The A8 underpass at Gogar Roundabout.
2) Cycling through the service yard of the Gyle shopping centre (I'm not sure it's connected all the way round even if there wasn't big gates at either end)
3) Along the platform of South Gyle Station.

Cycle Streets is a little better although still offers the A8 underpass which I suppose is technically the fastest route but with the tagalong it's out. It's reminded me about the bypass underpass though which I think I might try out.
