Woohoo. As long as they make the path a different colour to dogturds it should be a great improvement. I've not cycled it but it's a nearby handy walk.

Easter Road to Former Eastern General Site - Pedestrian/Cyclepath Improvements

The City of Edinburgh Council are currently progressing a scheme to enhance cycle and pedestrian provision between Easter Road and the former Eastern General site adjacent to Seafield Street. This proposed scheme supports walking and cycling policies detailed in the Council’s current Local Transport Strategy.

The scheme will involve widening, surfacing and lighting the existing off-road pedestrian/cycle path between Easter Road, Lochend Road and the former Eastern General site. Shared use and route signage will also be provided at access points along the route.

The Council are also looking at possible improvements to access points along the route, however this work is likely to take place later next year, or early in 2012.

The extent of the works is shown on the attached plan. It is currently anticipated that work on this scheme will commence on site in February 2011, and will last for approximately six weeks. For safety reasons, access to the path is likely to be restricted while the work is being carried out, however we will seek to minimise this disruption where possible.
"
A much needed and long awaited upgrade!

Presume it's part of long term plans to improve the path network - back to Leith Links and on to Porty.
