I went over leamington lift bridge the other day, to avoid the worst of the cobbles at the not PY barge. But forgot to come back on as usual to head to semple street and continued round towards kings theatre where I pulled up behind my boss. We went through the meadows together but he went up middle meadow walk whereas I stayed on meadows then used the short bit of segregated infrastructure then down the Pleasance.

As this was before 8a.m. Both routes not too bad but mine slightly nicer then and majorly nicer later in day. We arrived roughly at same time at the office, though I let my boss win :-)

thanks. we're off on holiday, but will have a look through those. i've been using cyclestreets, but didn't know about the other non-google ones. google throws out some interesting routes when i plug his details in, wish i understood routing algorithms.

i re-did one of my routes because the time i was saving by using the Lothian road wasn't worth the air pollution!

until i found this forum i did not know about cycle.travel - but i've found its the best for planning routes as others have stated above.

Cycle travel is the best one for putting you on a nearby off road path, if you prefer that

ALso cycle.travel smart routing and dragable routes. Gives distance and a very conservative time estimate.

And if he has time, just trying alternatives till he finds a route he likes - I find sometimes more distance but a much more pleasant ride makes a big difference to my enthusiasm for getting on the bike instead of the bus. (Also if the wind is howling down Dundas Street I am weak and would prefer not to ride up the hill into it, so diversions tend to happen!)

V good for dragging line to find exact routes - and therefore mileage.

just wondering if any are better than others.

my partner is convinced that his commute is 8 miles, and as a result barely manages to ride once a week (previously doing a 6 mile commute every day). my planner (not the one he uses) says 5.5! his also has him doing a fairly nasty right hand junction on the way home, where cyclists and drivers often seem to have different interpretations of where everyone is going. mine doesn't do offer that turn, but does suggest he try to cross the queensferry road at a junction with no lights or roundabout.

(for privacy, i'd rather not give start/finish points.)
