It now seems to have reverted to its former state as a kind of low-grade urban raceway, meaning that there is nowhere safe to cross west of the Haymarket Yards junction until you get beyond Devon Place. (And TBH the crossings at Haymarket Yards, and east of Rosebery Crescent, are irritatingly slow anyway.) I suspect that this could have just as much of an impact on footfall in the shops as does people not being able to park (often illegally) right outside the door of the shop.</p> <p>Given that this is the busiest time of year for pedestrian visitors to Edinburgh, I have to say that I haven't so far noticed eager festival goers thronging the street and patronising the retail businesses based there.
