I just remembered there's no dropped kerb at the Melville Gate Road

I went along here earlier this week and there is now a dropped kerb at the west end of Melville Gate Road. The pavement to get to it is quite narrow, but it's definitely an improvement.

Sorry to bump an old thread, but I found this post whilst searching for something else, and thought I'd update.

@greenroofer Twisty, wind is not a concept on an electric bike

I once Bimbled the entire round the pentlands Sustrans route, with good sweet shop stop in Penicuick then over the top to balerno

@gembo - I had to read this one twice. Was the Sustrans route blustery or twisty?

Bimbled out on the windy Sustrans route in my lunch break. Was very nice (fortunately had done once before so no wrong turns)

Came back the dobbies road. Was very not nice but a lot quicker.

Do not want to puncture the electric bike tyres as tricky to fix. Dalkeith road deposits me at sheriffhall.

I take the pavement from the Drum roundabout to Dobbies but watch out as there can be quite a bit of debris on the pavement including broken glass.

The Dobbies way is OK if you swallow pride and go on the pavement. Never quite clear how to do that on the way back.

I take the pavement on the south side to Dobbie's, then use the pedestrian crossing to get to the north side.

Dalkeith Road if you're in a rush, Musselburgh/Inveresk/Whitecraig if there's time to be leisurely. Dobbie's/Gilmerton is a private Sheriffhall Bypass for important motor vehicles.

Aye, shared use from the Drum St/Gilmerton Station Road roundabout all the way to the west end of Melville Gate Road.

I just remembered there's no dropped kerb at the Melville Gate Road end though, so you might want to rejoin the road here for the last 100m. Or maybe your electric bike copes just fine with bumping off pavements?

Yeah, I always take the shared pavement past there now. Bit more faff crossing the roundabouts, but fewer encounters with crazy impatient drivers.

A few options. Avoiding Sheriffhall is generally recommended, so the best way into Midlothian is along Gilmerton Road, then past Dobbie's. There's a shared use pavement from Gilmerton Station Road to Dobbie's. Then along Melville Gate Road, and turn right into Dalkeith. There's another shared use pavement from Melville Gate Road into Dalkeith. Careful turning onto Melville Gate Road if you use the shared use pavement on the way back, sightlines aren't great.

Getting up the hill, there's not much to choose between Kirk Brae and Gilmerton Road. Kirk Brae is steeper, but has fewer parked cars to contend with. Watch for close passes at the punch points on Kirk Brae, and at the very bottom. I normally turn along Clavrrhouse Drive to avoid the steepest bit, but your electric steed might have fewer issues.
