E.g. Edinburgh Bike Co-op Courier bike. Number of gears not the thing, range the gears cover is the thing. Single speed bikes are trendy and work well on the canal towpath. The Union canal is a contour canal so towpath is very flat. If straying from towpath, get more gears but no more than 8 (we won't check this you can get 9, 10, 11 etc if you want to) </p> <p>You must have mudguards, lights and panniers. I think you will notice that a lot of people ride mountain bikes in Edinburgh. The city has a lot of hills and there are cobbled streets and potholes. A mountain bike helps with these.
