The diggers are in at the old Corstorphine Hospital site.

Which will be finished first - the new housing development or the long-promised pedestrian crossing at Kaimes Road?

Interesting that the bulk of those wanting restrictions live in houses with a garage and driveway.

If the Council enforced planning rules there might be fewer illicit driveways in Corstorphine effectively taking up a space 24/7 when not in use, thus allowing more space for transient parkers.

It only appears to be asking to progress plans to implement parking restrictions. They'll need to come back again for formal approval so I don't imagine they will get much attention until then.

“

Speaking after the meeting of the council’s development management sub-committee, Murrayfield Community Council chairman, John Yellowlees, said no affordable housing on the site was “banishing the poor where they cannot be seen”.

Planning officers said that 48 out of the 89 trees on the site will be removed through landscaping, which are “non-native or in poor condition”.

Mr Yellowlees added: “What’s the point of the conservation areas because anything goes – particularly the loss of trees? And that comes after the Princes Street Gardens trees row.

“Developers have cash (and lawyers) which makes the Council think twice.”

Which also works when Councils think about refusing planning permission.

Unfortunately SG has a track record of tending to back developers when they appeal.

I'm not aware of these powers being used by the Council - although there is every chance they have and I don't know about it. There are normally two reasons councils don't like using these types of powers.

1. They have to spend cash (up front) that they don't have - even though they can claim it back.
2.Developers have cash (and lawyers) which makes the Council think twice.

Thanks Morningsider, that sounds like the necessary laws are in place. do you know if the powers have been used at any point in their 20 years of existence (especially if done so by CEC)? Is there a barrier to it's use or is this just a case of the council acting like it's teeth have fallen out?

I wouldn't normally argue for anyone being put into undue hardship as a cause of capitalism. But these people are playing the captilist game for potentially huge personal gain and need reminded of the rules.

If there is no chance of the building being developed profitably within the rules then perhaps it's time an example was made of one of these companies.

acsimpson - both Councils and Scottish Ministers have powers to undertake urgent works to preserve unoccupied listed buildings and then bill the owners (Sections 49 and 50 of the Planning (Listed Buildings and Conservation Areas) (Scotland) Act 1997). They also have powers to issue repairs notices and buy any listed building being left to rot, with a view to its eventual demolition, for "minimum compensation" - which has a fairly lengthy legal meaning.

Here's a quote from the Council's own transport officials on this development:

"b. The proposed footway on the existing access is the only accessible route for disabled users and is required to be built to adoptable standards (private road/public public); the proposed does not comply with inclusive design and hence the Equality Act 2010."

I am genuinely amazed that they have approved a development that isn't accessible to disabled pedestrians. That's genuinely scandalous.

Also, less surprising:

"The applicant proposes a total of 152 cycle parking provision and complies with the Council's 2009 parking standards. However, the proposed 68 cycle parking at the parking bays will be inaccessible as they will be blocked by vehicles using the adjacent parking bays. This is not acceptable."

Well that was a thoroughly depressing twitter feed. It all seems to boil down to the public purse bailing out private developers who have paid over the odds for development opportunities. Is there really no teeth in the legal process which could be used to force these developers to maintain the listed buildings they have purchased?

If a shopkeeper buys stock for too much they would go bankrupt so why are developers immune to standard economic practice?

People always oppose the introduction of CPZs. It was same when the zones were extended to S1-4 / N1-4 and same again for the new zone outside the RIE.

But once the zones are in, almost everyone becomes in favour and no one wants to go back to the old.

I have often supported the Lid Dems but they do seem to have gone a little off the rails in their search for meaning recently. I suspect ACH has responded to a vocal minority on Facebook who object to anything the council does especially if it involves restrictions on their use of private motor vehicles.

The council for their part listed parking restrictions in Corstorphine as an option for reducing their budget deficit. Although I don't see a problem with that per se it was a pretty poor piece of PR for the scheme and ACH seems to be jumping on the bandwagon of it.

Running a petition is a sure way to only get responses from one side of the spectrum so here is what I sent him via his contact us page:

"I thought I would let you know that I am strongly opposed to your petition on the parking controls in Corstorphine and surrounding areas. It is only by introducing measures like this that we can stop people using the area as a park and ride.
We should be supporting the council in every endeavour possible to reduce car usage within the city boundary. However you and your colleagues within the Lib Dems seem to be swinging more and more towards supporting 1960s models of city design which are unsustainable in a world of climate breakdown."

@hankchief, yes very peculiar given the locals were supposedly complaining about Fifers et cetera parking free in their streets. Is it only those with a corstorphine resident sticker to be allowed to park for free in corstorphine ? Other areas such as Merchiston have had controlled parking for years. This stopped my Oddbins dealer parking there and catching bus to George Street so that is more than 18 years as soon will be that length of time I have lived out in the burbs. 18 years in Balerno, 12 more to go and then I am a local.

Sorry Blueth, I should have mentioned it on here.

There is a Facebook & Twitter account linked to Cleaner Greener Corstorphine @CGCorstorphine which publicised it.

Where was that publicised? I'd have been there had I known about it.
