avalanche ! Few years ago, ok a lot really, we were hill walking/ice climbing?mucking about in Glencoe, above the Ball bridge, 5oo sisters range, deep midwinter, cold as cold, all safe, been freezing for ages, traversing a ridge, 5 of us, roped up, crampons, axes et all ! Stunning sunny day, deep and crisp and even.....Slab moved about ten feet, down ! The absolute scariest feeling in my life ! Initial slide knocked us all over into the snow, Grrrrrr noise, like polystyrene being squashed.,slab seemed to get jammed by some thing underneath,small spindrift rolled past us as we picked our faces out of the snow.Absolutely terified, very gingerly made a very quick descent to the Clachaig Bar.........Beware chinook down draft !
be carefull !

I dislodged our many icicles yesterday afternoon to make it a bit easier for the guttering to cope. Not sure whether the yet-uninsulated loft and the slight constant thaw to the underparts of the roof-snow will increase or decrease the risk of damage.

Ouch, sorry to hear about that damage nearefare. I have been wondering if there is any advice going around about removing roof snow and found this story from the BBC saying that homeowners are responsible and they should get contractors out to do it. That would be easy if the whole city did it I'm sure..

My husband got the snow on the roof at the back to come down by throwing snowballs and leaning out of the window poking it with a stick.

avalance off my roof 20 mins ago, took all the iron guttering down with it and made a decent dent in garden fence, few dangling tiles also.

maybe not a huge avalanche but as the guy says, enough to take you over the edge and be dead. Dougal Haston climbed Everest with Doug Scott and survived but died in avalanche whilst out skiing on New Years Day in the alps.

Tiny bit like cyclingon road at the moment - easy enough to do but risk factor exponential from two weeks back.

From Twitter

"
@Edinburgh_CC:

There is a real avalanche risk to walkers & skiers in Pentlands, with lesser risk facing Arthur's Seat. More:

http://ow.ly/3jzwn

"
Cliff Smith, who runs avalanche awareness courses, said: "We're not saying people shouldn't continue to enjoy walking and ski-ing in the Pentlands, but they do need to be aware of the dangers of avalanche, particularly where snow layers are weak. Our advice is to avoid slopes which are most heavily loaded with snow, since the added weight from walkers or skiers could trigger an avalanche. There's a risk of avalanches even on Arthur's Seat - just a small slide of snow could take a walker off a ledge, so people really do need to keep their wits about them.
