@Rob, you're right. They might have sorted the other path for cycling instead of routing bicycles past the school entrance... There is the right to cycle on them all mind.

@Colonies_Chris You're right, especially given the aforementioned kids are completely oblivious around the cycle path anyway. It doesn't matter where you're riding, you have to exercise caution.

@crowriver the other route also features conflict oriented design, only with cars rather than children. I prefer to slow down for someone else's safety than hope someone else will slow down for mine.

Having passed the school at pick up time the path is usually blocked by waiting parents. Could the parents not wait just inside the school gates and then escort their kids out of the playground?

If the message were just 'look out for kids', I would have no problem with it. It's the very specific request to stay on the path - precisely where most kids will be - that mystifies me.

While I have no problem with the message (you're near a school, watch out for kids) I do find their prominence and official looking seriousness to be in stark contrast with the planters they painted "20" on and placed nowhere near the road.

These seemed reasonably obvious - keep to the path, so that you go through the chicanes, so that you slow down?

Whilst passing cycles are one of the main causes of grass-flattening I assumed the grasscrete mesh stuff was mostly there to help cope with the passage of many feet and the tendency of that section to get a bit boggy in the damp, despite the remedial drainage works a few years ago.

On the rare occasions I'm going this way, I use the matting to avoid the inevitable 'No, you first'; 'No, no - YOU first' carry-on when cyclists and pedestrians are trying to come through the chicanes at the same time.

I really does seem strange to ask cyclists to get as close to the school gates with kids around, when cyclists can safely use the matted detour to give them a wide berth.

On both the chicanes outside the school, there are notices requesting people (meaning cyclists, presumably) to keep to the path, as there might be children around. I don't understand this. Surely it would make more sense to encourage cyclists to go around the chicanes, on the matting that's been laid, so that they're away from the school gates?
