Off to Barnton shortly but despite it being quite close to Balerno as the crow flies, i will head to Russell Road and back out again to avoid the motors

Cyclepath to Davidsons Mains & through Davidsons Mains (Going round the back via Silverknowes Rd to avoid Main Street) to Blackhall/ Ravelston Dykes, Roseburn and then up through Polwarth. Avoids most busy roads which will still be thre biggest 'danger' you face if you don't want to risk the neds. Personally I would avoid Queensferry Road.

I would probably just follow Queensferry Road all the way into town, as suggested by Arellcat, and then either jink through the Haymarket area or blast up Lothian Road. I know you want to avoid that - but it is far more sedate than it used to be at night.

I would go straight in from Cramond Brig along Queensferry Road all the way to Blackball, then get on the NEPN to Roseburn (very rare to see loiterers on this section), off again at Russell Road and cross up to Shandon, Polwarth and eventually Morningside from there.

@greenroofer- I would cross the A90 at the traffic lights near Cramond Brig, go through Cammo Walk and join Maybury Road at the top of the hill. Then you can join the A8 from there.

Motorised road traffic is always your greatest danger.

By not using the path at night, it also contributes to others feeling unsafe there because "there's no one around"

I've done this sort of thing before. Maybury Road southbound is a decent option if it's quiet, but I turn left at Craigs Road to cut through to the A8 into town. Then, Balgreen, Hutchison, Shandon and Tipperlin is my favoured route.

Alternatively, don't bother with Maybury: just take Queensferry Road/A90 all the way to the west end. It's quite a quick road. Once in town I'd nip across to Shandwick Place, Canning Street, and hightail it out of town along Lothian Road.

Alternatively if your friend wants to avoid the Craigsleith to Roseburn path too they could go over Maybury and in on the Glasgow Road.

On that route, the only part of the NEPN where you're likely to encounter troublesome locals is the Drylaw path. You can bypass that section by staying on the main road, then rejoining the NEPN at the Craigleith junction (via Maidencraig Crescent). Otherwise there's a big climb over the ridge at Ravelston Dykes and down to Roseburn. Or you could follow Qferry Rd to Drumsheugh Gdns>Palmerston Pl>Torphichen Pl>Morrison Link>Morrison Cres, across the WAR at the ped crossing, straight across to Dundee St, and over to Holy Corner via Yeaman Pl.

I have the occasional habit of returning to Edinburgh over the Forth Bridge after dark and late in the evening. After my poor experience on the NEPN last time, when I was accosted, but not damaged, by some local characters, I am disinclined to use the NEPN in future.

If I want to get from Cramond Brig/Barnton to Morningside without using the NEPN and staying on the public road where it's probably safer, what's the best way to go? I'd ideally also avoid roads that are full of drunk people (Lothian Road, for example)

I'd be doing this during weekend evenings, so traffic will be relatively light.
