That sounds cold. However is Tony's fish bar not still almost directly over the road from the bike station?

Ponied up for the bus this afternoon and took an exploratory ride into town to see where the bus went. Jumped off at Tollcross and wandered over to Evans to look at touring bikes, then Laid Back to say hello, then wandered up to my actual destination of Morningside to catch this evening's showing at the Dominion, buying myself a nice decaf latte en route to take in with me.

Discovered that, this being Saturday, the film was unexpectedly fully booked already, and would I be minded to book for the later showing? Some simple arithmetic gives me the answer. Would I [rule 2].

It is now shortly after 5pm. I am three hours early leaving the cinema, I have half a cup of coffee getting cold, and I am a mile and a half west of the bus route to get home. I walk to The Bike Station on a prospective visit but find it closed half an hour ago. There are no fish and chip shops in my location. I walk to the bus stop and my bus is still 20 minutes away. I carry on walking. I end up walking another mile before it catches up with me.

I am now drinking tea and eating chocolate.

Those two anecdotes have definitely put me off replacing my ancient gas cooker with induction for eco reasons!

The baking tray problem contains the germ of its own solution though: turn the hob back up to 9 and put more oil on the tray. That should nicely season the burnt bit and render the tray non-stick once again.

Hopefully not too many "interesting" fluorine compounds will be produced by this exercise...

Madame IWRATS's mum has an oven so automated that you can't set the temperature. You have to tell it what you're making and it decides what hotness that requires. Sometimes I have to unplug it to prevent incineration of the food. I suspect it somehow connected to the internet in 2016 and caused Brexit.

Some days when I get home from work I just don't feel like inventing and cooking a meal, and have only the enthusiasm for heating food. The other day I decided noodles and sauce would be just the ticket. So I boiled the kettle, and stuck my noodles into the saucepan and switched the hob onto '9' to get the saucepan warming up. The pan didn't seem to be getting warm at all and the water was just sitting, but why was there a vague smell of burnt olive oil?

Oh no! The hob had auto-detected both my saucepan and my steel non-stick baking tray that I'd plonked out of the way at the back of the hob – but not out of the way enough so it was sitting on one of the powerful heating elements – and instead of my saucepan the hob had auto-selected the baking tray, which I hadn't realised, and which now had a lovely circular mark through the non-stick where it had been inductioned to within an inch of its life.

Oh dear. Non stick or metal base in the pan. Whatever you do burning the remains might be the only way. Unless it's an expensive or metal pan then replacement might be best option .

ASDA new pan about £5 - life is too short to use a scraper to try and get the lino off the pan, and the smell of burning plastic the next few times you use the pan puts you off your beans your cooking in said pan.

In the course of doing my least favourite thing ever (Asking For Help To Do Something I Could Probably Really Do On My Own, It Will Just Be Harder And Much More Tiring) I got distracted by the effort of will needed to write a whole paragraph on Facebook that might suggest I'm not totally 110% sorted. So I forgot to take the rice off the heat. The rice burned. Smoke, much smoke, and the smoke alarm needs a ladder to switch off, so I grabbed the pan and held it out the window till it was emitting a bit less smoke, plonked a handy teatowel over it and went to dash to the front door (rather than drop the pan into next door's garden), knocked the pan lid off, snatched the lid up off the floor before remembering it was hot, burnt my hand, dumped the pan on kitchen floor to stick sizzling fingers under the cold tap... and then I noticed a new and different burning smell. That would be the pan melting a hole in the lino then.

Argh.

Now I have a freezing living room and kitchen, a flat that stinks of burnt rice and melted lino, sore fingers, and a suspicion I won't be getting my whole deposit back after all. And I think I might have killed my rice pot.

Also it's DARK.
