Just for reference, if by "triathlon saddles" you mean Adamo ones; I have one on my TT bike and it is great for that but it takes the pressure off the front of one's sensitive areas, rather than the tailbone, if you follow me...

While browsing, I came across suspension seatposts. I'm intrigued. Are these a gimmick or worthwhile?

Good ones are great, bad ones are bad. They seem to have stopped making the mid-range one I've got. I think they're a throw-back to hardtail days in many ways.

Update: we went shopping at the weekend and bought a Selle Royal. http://www.halfords.com/cycling/bike-parts/saddles-seat-posts/selle-royal-respiro-soft-moderate-mens-saddle

He's not ready to try it properly yet but if it doesn't offer *some* measure of improvement then I'm not sure anything will. Fingers crossed.

No idea if this would help with his pain, but I just want to post a link to the Manta saddle because it looks brilliant. http://mantasaddle.co.uk

It looks like Bike Coop do a 30-day exchange/credit on Specialized saddles. I've got my eye on this as maybe fitting the brief: https://www.edinburghbicycle.com/specialized-avatar-comp-gel-saddle.html

He has been out on a bog standard Spesh saddle before all this kicked off and I don't recall any specific saddle complaints then. Worst case scenario, Specialized won't work for him and I exchange for a nice lady saddle for me (that I don't need but would quite like). ;)

It's for a MTB, Arellcat. His main mode of transport is motorbike and that doesn't particularly aggravate him for some reason. We're guessing lean angle and flatness of seat factor in somewhere. It's quite a puzzle.

While browsing, I came across suspension seatposts. I'm intrigued. Are these a gimmick or worthwhile?

I have a Moon saddle. You can use it with the ends of the crescent facing forwards or backwards, depending on preference. It does require a bike with an upright riding position, otherwise you slide off it.

I haven't needed it since I bought my RANS crank forward bike, and (shamefully) I've hardly ridden that since I bought my Elephant Bike which has an almost bolt-upright riding position and a huge, ridiculously padded saddle.

But if you really need to take pressure off one's tailbone, a recumbent bike with a mesh seat is the way to go.

Triathlon saddles are the kind of U shaped ones? His pressure point is apparently towards the rear so I'm not entirely sure about them.

Heh, those Moonsaddles look bizarre! It must be like learning to ride all over again on a saddle with no nose at all.

(I just wanted to quote that.)

I saw someone on what I think must have been one of these earlier in the year: https://www.moonsaddle.com/ but no idea if it would work for Mr Trixie's tailbone I'm afraid.

The google search "triathlon saddles" is your friend.

Our friends the triathletes (there are many here as well tbh) have tastes for saddles like these.

I've seen similar saddles on Audax as well.

Background: Mr Trixie has an old tailbone injury. He didn't really know it was ongoing (accident happened years ago) til rediscovering cycling and sitting on a nasty saddle for a couple of hours nearly did for him. Nerve damage, weeks of agony, all calming down now. Doc prescribed rest etc and advised a special saddle if he wanted to keep on cycling. He desperately wants to but he can't risk further injury. Santa will bring him a special saddle if I can find one that does the job.

Do any of the local shops sell proper nether-friendly, verging-on-the medical saddles? It's such a gamble to drop a wedge of cash on something online without being able to get him to at least perch on it in a shop first. It's for leisure riding, so only 10-20 miles at a time. Needs to have a good cut out below the tailbone and as much of a gully as possible through the middle.

Anyone got friends of friends with tales of tails that can point me in a direction? I've been looking at Selle SMP TRK (looks like Gonzo from The Muppets)and the Specialized range.
