“

Cyclists would get a head start at traffic light junctions along the tram route in Edinburgh under city council plans announced today. New traffic lights that go green for riders before other traffic would be installed at 14 sites, if approved after consultation.

They are already in use at the Leith Walk/McDonald Road junction.

I've never used them.

If I get to the junction and it's at red, I filter to the front. If turning right, I tend to just charge across on the advance cyclist green light: there's just enough time if you're a quick off the mark.

So anyone seen someone use the two-stage turn IRL? I noticed last night that the road markings are mostly gone. I doubt a stranger would notice they were there any longer.

"quite a few dismounting and walking across on green man (saves time)"

Nearly did that today, but managed to turn right during the advanced green phase. Close call though.

I will be trying the two-stage with my partner in near future. She had a collision with a car that turned into her path on this junction a few years ago. I have a feeling she may be more comfortable doing it in two stages or the old dismount and push on green man.

@Klaxon I used it once. I haven't seen anyone else use it. I've seen a couple of people dismount and walk. If the advanced green lasted a little longer they wouldn't need to dismount - use the ped phase to position yourself to the right of the ASL turn on the advanced green. With the current timing this requires a sprint start as soon as the light changes.

@chdot Precisely. It's an 8-80 style turn. As in, it's aimed at those who don't want to mix with traffic but it leaves you completely exposed to traffic on a road where the cycling infrastructure is superficial at best, if you even make it that far. It also releases you at the worst possible time - at the head of traffic using Brunswick Road/McDonald Road to avoid London Road/Broughton Street/etc AND those using Hopetoun Crescent to avoid the traffic light at the top of Annandale Street. The last place I want to be is at the head of a queue of people who think I'm ruining their clever time saving plans.

Don't get me wrong, 2 stage right turns are generally a good thing but without any real infrastructure at the other side it's really just an ASL (which personally, I avoid as much as possible). I also know these things can't all happen at once but the plans I've seen for McDonald Road do nothing to improve the situation. Maybe a simultaneous ped/cycle phase ahead of the Leith Walk phase would be a better fit, effectively segregating McDonald Road by time rather than physically. Banning left turns from Leith Walk would make it even better.

I could go on about exactly what's wrong with McDonald Road but that's not the topic and I've already gone on long enough so, in summary - it's fine. It's straight forward, it allows you to stay out of the middle of the road and when you move off you're not in any more danger than you would've been after making a conventional right turn.

Hitherto I have taken the right turn earlier and then the traffic lights further up leith walk, will give this a go. Desire line head for advance box then dismount and push sounds fine

It’s not 8-80

If you follow the steps ‘correctly’ you effectively get left to wait in an ASL from which you get 2 seconds early start before cars are bearing down on you

It also takes forever as you have to wait on your current phase finishing and the pedestrian phase to run before you can turn.

Safety through deprioritisation ‘get to the back’

I’ve seen nobody using it yet - but quite a few dismounting and walking across on green man (saves time)

But is it?

I haven't been yet, but from the diagrams and photos online it looks being left in the middle of the road(?)

IMO the advanced green is too short. It's an 8-80 style turn from an 8-80 route which gives you half a second to clear 4 lanes of traffic before entering a section of road which is decidedly NOT 8-80.

I'm not sure how you could address that without remodeling McDonald Road, which you should absolutely do!
