Ahhh - the website is pretty confusing. I've often thought an app like this should exist and if has genuinely "popped up" in Edinburgh under the radar that's really cool.

@jonty - there are three different apps at the link; the Button one you have to scroll down for.

Sure you got the "Button" app, and not the other one? I signed up 30 mins ago and didn't have to enter that.

But... but, why's there not a map of enabled crossings?

I just downloaded the app and it seems to require me to classify the disability you have as part of the signup process. I don't feel particularly comfortable posing as disabled to try this out, even if just on an app. Is there an official way around this?

NMW was always unresponsive, though not quite as slow as Fishwives' Causeway. Clerk Street is still almost immediate.
Argyle Place not found, so <strike>shall be</strike> has been requested, along with Leamington Walk/Bruntsfield Place, Hawkhill Ave and Lindsay Road.

Has anyone else noticed that the toucan crossing of Buccleuch St. (east end of NMW) has become unresponsive?

I'm sure it used to have a "trigger" button where the lights changed immediately. But now it seems you have to wait for ages.

Has someone been tinkering (e.g. at community council / councillor request) with the timing of the lights at Melville Dr / Buccleuch St. / Hope Pk Tce / Buccleuch St. ped-x in the hope of improving "traffic flow"?

Looks like a great idea for the blind / disabled and for cyclists.

Looks like the developer is Edinburgh-based,as the screenshots on the Google Play Store have Queen St and Princes St crossings in them.

You'll all have noticed that the Push buttons on Toucan crossings are always in the wrong places to use when you are on a bike.

Most Toucan crossings aren't able to get to button easily on the bike and there is no induction loop to detect the bike, even on the new infrastructure with new cycle paths leading to the Toucan crossings.

What to do?

I have recently found a simple answer, the Neatebox Button app. It was originally designed for disabled users, but Neatebox have realised that is also great for cyclists too (Gavin Neate used to ride a recumbent trike).

Just down load the app to your phone and as you approach the Toucan crossing it uses geofencing and Bluetooth to tell the crossing you are coming and electronically presses the button for you.

If the Toucan crossings you use regularly isn't already enabled then fill out this request form and they can get the Council to install one. In so doing you will also be helping people with mobility issues to get about safely.

So do something nice today and help people with mobility issues, whilst helping yourself... ;-)
