Thanks, I'll give the route through Kirknewton House a miss then. I'm always looking for ways to add interest to my wee cyclocross loop. Was also looking at the right turn off Leyden Rd (heading south) through Lawheads but it looks similar ie would mean cycling through the farm with subsequent conflict issues.

Ed1 do you climb back up the 6 foot wall/drop?!"

Yes I climb back over there may be a better way but its easier to climb over than walk much further. Also its near the top hole on the golf course which makes it better walking down as don't get wet trousers from the long grass. ( of course do not walk on the green but the fairly short grass near it).

Apparently the people in the Big Hoose are a bit precious about people on Their Land and even dalmahoyers can be shouted at if they stray past an invisible line!

"does anyone know if it is possible/allowed to cycle through there"

I would guess the short answer would be no, I doubt it would be "allowed" in the sense someone may object, in the access rights respect not sure would be allowed either. Is it possible I would think so on mountain bike, on a road bike well what is possible.

I went past that entrance today would imagine people may object. It was actually the path from the Wang Lang to extend Long Dalmahoy that I went ride. There is a closed gate saying access only on that route , think that route may be considered legal, however I did not proceed. A short cut to raf Kirknewton which has no access rights official secrets act-) also a short cut to the Lang Whang but only go that way when going south Moffatt Carlisle and would not want to use a bumpy track.

The problem with the route from kirknewton house is 2 large houses, the natural boundary of the property has no country side access rights. If a large house a natural large boundary. Also in the context of the area people may object. The rights of ways don't seem particularly welcoming. Just past the quarry on the Long Dalmahoy road there is a right of way path to Balerno with a locked gate although there is a style so could walk it.

It may be the proximity to Edinburgh perceived security issues, also land ownership if one lord owns all the land better than smaller blocks for access rights as people think a field is their private garden etc, more likely to get told off rightly or wrongly. In more rural areas borders etc much less likely to get closed, locked gates or people objecting.

I was questioned previously for "looking at someone's land" when walking down Long Dalmahoy I had just stepped of the road as a car coming in both directions the car that stop to question. I would tend to think in context that the route from kirknewton house would possibly not be allowed or "welcome" but just a guess of course if someone has actually tried the route would have better idea.

On the same map it shows a track connecting the B7031 just south of Kirknewton with the extended part of Long Dalmahoy Road, does anyone know if it is possible/allowed to cycle through there ? Looks like it goes past Kirknewton House.

I ride Long dalmahoy road everyday its seems perfect cycling road to me. The cars don't go too fast as cant pass another car easily. As long as stay near the side of the road when a car going past is fine. The only time long Dalmahoy is bad is when the A71 is closed and get trucks that don't know the road.

I have wondered about a non A71 cycle to Dalmahoy for years, not found one but not looked that hard. I climb over the wall from Long dalmahoy road to go to the Dalmahoy. A 10 minute walk, the sports club bar is my nearest bar. It a near 6 foot drop so cant throw bike over wall.

@sheeptoucher, where are you trying to get to? Dalmahoy? Think the dotted line is a footpath?

On my old pentlands map there was a road right through dalmahoy from long dalmahoy road, alas closed off.

If it is dalmahoy then I fear always going to have a stretch of the a 71 to deal with.

Had a gander on Google Maps. You can see it from the satellite view, and I'm pretty sure it comes out here: Street View link.

Doesn't appear on OSM, so if you ever go along it, you could add it afterwards.

On my 'On Foot, By Bike (west)' Leaflet* picked up from the WoL centre there's a wee dotted line connecting the northwest corner of Heriot-Watt university grounds to just inside the turn-off into Dalmahoy Golf Club - it wiggles a bit but is not the A71, a major plus. But I can't think where the dalmahoy exit is - has anyone been down it?

Would mean I could get there car-less, and even open up Ratho! Long dalmahoy road seems a deathtrap and the A71 I like even less..

*actually it's this council one: http://www.edinburgh.gov.uk/downloads/file/6466/explore_west_edinburgh_-_ratho_newbridge_kirkliston_dalmeny_and_south_queensferry
