IWRATS, I may not have know about it at the time but now that I do I can agree that it's amusing.

I used to live in Hayfield. The developers hadn't even given it a road like name to disguise what they had dug up to start building. Most of the streets in East Craigs are named after local water courses, eg Burnside.

I've just realised that the recent Cala development in East Craigs is a modern example of this naming style. It has 5 different Burnbraes to add to the existing suffixless one. I guess they put as much thought into street names as they did to accessibility.

When I first moved to Edinburgh Marchmont Road had two pharmacists at opposite ends; William King and William Kong.

I may be the only person to have found that amusing.

Back on topic my wife informs me it isn't just an Edinburgh thing.

Larbert has at least 3 Broomages together and a further one plus a South Broomage nearby.

Google reveals a few more around Falkirk too (eg Watlings, Gartcows).

They are smaller places so perhaps not surprising that there are smaller numbers of roads with similar names.

Could it be a mid war period thing? Most of the examples I can think of come from that period.

My wife also points out that where she grew up was 1970's housing and all streets were named after Castles. In fact the estate was marketed as Castle Park.

Scientists say it's radon that seeps up into people's houses from the granite basolith under Aberdeen but it is in fact Scottish Presbyterianism.

I spoke once to the Street Naming Officer of Edinburgh District Council (as it then was). He said that they always tried to find names that had some historical relevance in the area. It follows then, that roads in an area would be based on the same historical reference.

For anyone interested in the Buckstones, you might find this interesting,

E.g.

Cherry Tree Ave;
Tall pines;
Oak lane;
